Splash Creative have photos on their site. If you know what you are looking for you will see a photo of the Million Dollar "secret", you can then judge how prctical it is for YOU. Let say the gimmick is bigger than a thumb t.

I would recommend picking up a copy of "Walter Jeans: Illusioneer". You can get this at Mike Caveney's website. I think it is the most descriptive book on the subject of the Million Dollar Mystery. There are advertisements, photographs, and diagrams of the MDM. There are only 500 copies in circulation, so I'd jump on it if I were you... It is $50.00 (a great price for such a wealth of information!!!)

Though it is a beautiful effect, I wouldn't suggest trying to pull it off unless you have a permanent theater or will be performing in one place for a while. You really have to watch your angles, lighting, and staging quite a bit.
It never hurts to enrich your mind with magic's history! Good luck to you! -Bryan |

Get the Walter Jeans book, you'll have answers to all you ask.
It's not a practical effect in the slightest though. It takes a bigger than average crew, a large truck, and a large wallet to get it off the ground........(pun intended). |

... and yet, there IS a working prototype available made from PVC Pipe in Jim Gerrish's PVC Pipe Illusions Book 2 (on my site). It is the most expensive illusion to build, even from PVC Pipe, but you may already own some of the pieces you will need. If not, it could cost as much as $500 to build from scratch.

I'd love to see a picture of that prototype Professor!!
I'm forced to imagine that there will be limitations over the original design when PVC is the construction material. Regardless, it's a testament to Mr Gerrish's design skills that such a modification to the original illusion was undertaken, let alone prototyped and made working. |

A more general definition/description appears in Bart Whaley's Encyclopedic Dictionary of Magic: "Stage illusion where as many objects, animals, or persons as the magician's budget and sense of showmanship permit can be produced from any box-like structure elevated above the stage."
This description is better because it fits all the variations of the Illusion that have appeared since its invention in 1927 by Walter Cerretta Jeans. The least important part of the illusion is the PVC pipe box, which could just as well be made of plastic foam board, cardboard, or popsicle sticks glued together. His version mounts in the middle of the stage on a stepladder (NOT made of PVC pipe) and of course the ****** is not made of PVC pipe, either, which is why it ends up costing about $500 if you buy everything from scratch at retail. The important thing is that this prop is capable of producing the "Million Dollar Mystery" effect as described above.

If my memory serves me right, I recall that Jeans also patented his invention. If that's the case, does anyone have the patent number? It would be interesting to see. If it exists and someone has the number, drop me a PM as we don't want that to be leaking to lurkers...
