I’m interested in how many left-handed magicians learn a
Trick “as is” or rework the trick for your left-handedness.
Any comments appreciated.

If you’re right handed you might not get the full implications
how frustrating this can sometimes be.
This applies to:

1. learning from diagrams in books, as well as moves in videos
2. holding and handling “off the shelf” stuff
3. handing items to spectators, and/or getting things from spectators.

Even the simple : “Two dollar window” is easier for a
“lefty” if you swap all the folds around.

Woo woo - represent. Ha ha - actually I do both depending on the tricks. Obviously everything is marketed towards the "right." But I will switch back and forth to find what feels right for me.

I'm a leftie and I have no problems with sleight of hand rightie. It's just something you gotta learn to do- or not. whatever is easier for you...

Thank’s fellow lefties.

I seem notice this more when starting to study of something new.

The toughest one was “jumping” out of an airplane. They just put a
right handed chute on me without thinking about it. If I would have
tried pulling with my left hand it could have done me in. Smile

I was just was plugging along and noticed that I started learning
some things just to then realize it might be easier if switched it around.
(Which required some re-learning).

I guess what will happen, which is the normal progression as I get
into it more, I’ll just forget about it.

I am right-handed myself, but in sports lefties do have an advantage. I can easily imagine it's exactly the same in magic. Things look different anyway if done by someone who is left-handed, so people might not see little things they would see if you were right-handed.

However, I have to say I don't envy you guys having to find out how to perform a trick different from the books/DVD's. I find it hard enough as it is Smile

I can sympathize with you. When I first watched the Daniel Garcia vids on TORN I had a tough time following him because he is left handed. I can't imagine having to decipher the moves all the time. Maybe I'm just dense......

Hi Mr. Ree:

Welcome to the lopsided world of the left-handers. Who would have ever thought that scissors wouldn't work if used in the left hand?

I take all my instructions and swap "left" for "right", and then practice the routine. It's confusing at first, but you get used to it.

Thanks all for your comments:

Yola Sol: Now you’ve got me thinking. I need to exploit tricks
that will either take advantage of being left-handed, or use it in
an awkward/funny way to get a laugh. Thanks . . .

ccccchunt: That’s exactly what I was talking about, maybe I’m dense too,
well at least tense . . .

jimhlou: Thanks for your thoughts. I am going to try making photocopies
of instructions and try changing words in the copied version. As an engineer I
though about OCR ing the documents and then find and replace "right" with "left"
in "Word" then printing the “new lefty instructions”. (Aaahhhh!)

Jaz Thanks the threads, I am going through these now. Usually I do a better
job with the search engine. . . But somehow I missed these.

By the way Jaz I took your advice about books and or DVDs in another tread.
(I think I read that thread at around 3:30 am).

I’ve been working the get “the feel” for an invisible deck.
The “fan” had not been working reliably for me.

As I’ve played cards from childhood , I’ve shuffled, dealt, fanned cards
during the normal process of playing cards.

What I just realized is that I sometimes handle the cards like a right
handed person and sometimes I handle the cards like a left handed person.
This switching from one hand to the other was not noticed by me until now.

Anyway – the invisible deck fan is working much better “left – handed”.

Now I have to sort out my mishmash ways of handling cards.

Sorry for the ramble . . ,

You should make a left handed video! I mean I would buy it but I am bias as I'm a righty but I'm sure you would have a hit!!!
