Gwyd asked me if I could make this, so I went ahead and did. Not for swallowing, this sword has a 4-1/2" 316L surgical stainless steel 'blade', hand scrolled brass handguard, wire wrapped handle and forged stainless ball bearing pommel. Handcrafted and painstakingly polished to a mirror finish. Gwyd came up with idea and invented a whole specific act to use with it (which means if you want to do it, you should ask him first).

Thanks for all the compliments guys. I like to look at myself as a work-for-hire blacksmith. Most of my work that has been bought is from the sideshow community, although I have sculptures and other works that would sell for thousands if there were a buyer. If anyone else has ideas, you can commission me for the work, just let me know.

OK that does it. What we NEED is a Magic Crafts Covention or Trade Fair where all us handy workers can gather to be met by our serious professional buying folks. Not a regular magic convention to attract the 'food tubes', there's enough of those that blend in to each other and no competitions, plenty of those too, just nice good sized trade fair gathering thingy with maybe a headline performer.

I agree completely. Doug, you are a craftsman, as myself and appreciate the expertise and time that it takes to accomplish such tasks. I hope your words do not fall upon deaf ears.

Red Stuart has been using a tiny sword for blockhead for years... so I'd prolly ask him if I was going to use it.

I think the asking has more to do with the routining of the act than the prop. I'd still love to talk to Red about it. Had no idea anyone else was doing anything like it. Does anyone have contact information?
The nail sword looks amazing Nips...I can't wait to bury it to the hilt in my nose!! Gwyd |

Wow what a compliment!
"The nail sword looks amazing Nips...I can't wait to bury it to the hilt in my nose!!" You know its good when Gwyd wants to shove it up his noes (not trying to insuating anythiong about drugs ....... but I have seen his act and the laymen (not the right trem for this forum I suppose) might think that). Great idea too Gwyd! (even if it was also done before ... so great ide to Red as well) Dave |

Erik, I have known Red Stuart since 2001 and spent countless hours with him on and off stage and he never had a mini sword for blockhead. He has plenty of other props, although I have severed my ties with him a couple years ago so it is possible he recently acquired one. Harley Newman teaches with little plastic cocktail swords for years... you may be thinking about that (you all should know that Harley and Red are unrelated twins, born on the same day, same month, same year) so I could understand your confusion. Either way, Gwyd does have a very specific routine for this prop that I know for very certain that Red never has and never will do. With all due respect, Red Stuart has never come up with any original act and his routine is, well, very routine so no one has to ask him for permission to do anything. He does, however, take sword swallowing to the extreme.

I feel better now...Thanks Nips.
I'll let you all know how it looks (And feels) when I get it in my paws. And maybe even drop a few hints about the routine... Gwyd |

Gwyd- I completely agree with you that It's the routine and not the prop that people deserve ownership of. As far as contacting Red he is on myspace or you can also contact him through his website at red@redstuart.com .
Nipples- Yeah Red's act is pretty bland and unoriginal, I do however specifically remember him using a sword for blockhead, This was 2005 when I did a gig with him in Harrisburg, but I'm sure like everything Red does, he's been doing it for years. I'll check with my brother and see if we have a pic. |

Ok I talked around a little bit and found out that Red got his "mini-sword" from Dan Myers who has been blockheading a mini-sword for 6 years.

Mini-swords used to be very popular as letter openers. You can often find them in antique stores and flea markets.
Red and I ARE related, through clan affiliations, so we'd be something like 17th cousins, maybe more. I'm the older twin, but he's got a lot more hair. Born in New Jersey, yup!

The thing is about the mini-swords I make (yes, I am making more) is that they are round, not flat and sharp like the letter opener kind. Being that there's no edge to deal with makes it easier. Also, the letter opener kind is mostly a mild steel with a chrome plating, or silver (the expensive kind), whereas mine are solid 316L surgical stainless steel. Non-magnetic... you could bring one on a plane (I wouldn't reccomend it though).
I keep forgetting about the clan relation, Harley. Also how Red appears to be 20 years older than you.

Well, I definately want one. Put me down I always wanted to Sword Swallowing but due to an overactive (highly senstive) gag reflex that is a non starter. However aside from a mega-sneeze that might impale a spectator, I can learn it (I think) from Gwyd. (even though I like Sylver better.)
