If someone, such as news reporter, were to ask you why you do magic for children, or why you teach them workshops, what would be your answers? What is the "why" behind your passion?

There is a card you will frequently find on the top shelf of my magic table. On it you will find:
To a Child One hundred years from now It will not matter What kind of car I drove, What kind of house I lived in, How much money I had, Nor what my clothes look like, But the world will be a little better, The universe a little brighter, Because I was important To a child. Bob, thanks for sharing. From what I've read, you DO live a charmed life. But then...the way you live, and places you invest your time probably had quite a lot to do with that.

Bob -
I've seen that poem many times over the years. Do you know who the author is? Or is it that famous writer, "Anonymous"? - Donald
Donald Dunphy is a Victoria Magician, British Columbia, Canada.

Bob, I appreciate your sentiment. What about the fact that kids don't get wholesome live entertainment anymore. Magicians are relics; we preserve art forms and ways of interacting that are otherwise scarce among the Ipods and X-boxes. That's also a worthy consideration.

I love that poem too. Also think it's very true.
I have for years thought it was by an unknown author, everyone lists it that way, but recently I found out that it came from excerpt from "Within My Power" by Forest Witcraft. Tom Posted: Jul 11, 2007 11:26pm The world will be a little better because of what the child did. He found a cure for cancer, or maybe he was only nice to others, and they in turn passed it on. If we had enough of the niceness going on, then the world probably would be a better place. I guess that’s what it means. Makes sense to me. Tom

Tom is right!

When I returned to Alabama in 1983, I was a consultant to KinderCare International in Montgomery and taught MBA students at a state university. (My fields are Marketing, Management and Finance.) For years I have also been the lobbyist for children of divorce. Kids do count with me. I raised two without their mom. (Their mom died while they were very young.) |

I got it! If a kid you are nice to does well it may be because you were kind to the lil' guy and that moment caused him to take a direction he or she may not have. Now, what if the kid becomes the next Ted Bundy?

It's not just about the money for me. I like the fact that I don't have to get up till noon. It also helps to stroke my massive ego and is an excellent way to meet desperate single mothers.

While Bob's post is a bit on the sentimental side, I find the supposed "British" response . . . well it makes me feel sorry for the British. The money is easier made in other ways, and well, we all need our ego stroked, but geez, it is just sad. Is this uniquely British, or are American's attitude unique?
I am not a flag waver, but in this regard, I am proud to be an American. |

The truth is - If I was asked the question by a British newspaper I WOULD give a tongue in cheek response. Something in the style of Ken Brooke's line:
'It's better than digging roads'. The British generally do not go for syrupy sentimentality. If I was asked by an American newspaper I would, of course wax lyrical about the laughter of children and say that God blessed me with the gift to entertain. I might even break into song and weep a few tears of joy. That ought to do the trick.

As to the "why" behind the passion. Well, that's the thing about passion; it rarely requires reason.
