Some firemen see their jobs as merely putting out some lame numbskulls kitchen accidents.
Other firemen see their job in a higher purpose, which involves modeling heroism and saving lives. Magicians, I am sure, will rate themselves somwehere along the same continuum. Whether one sees it merely as an idle diversion, or something larger, is entierly up to you.

The oldest and most primitive amateur definition of “professional” is “does it for the money”. This is a far cry from the concept of “professionalism”. (Thieves do it for the money!)
