I want to add a suspension to my show, and am doing research at this point. On the forums here, I see that the Magic Carpet and Chair Suspension are both liked. Note: although I do more children's shows than others, I don't limit myself to Children's Shows (does anyone? )
Questions: In your opinion which suspensions would be best for my purposes - and why? (Note - if you like one other than the two mentioned above, bring it up ... I'm not limiting my search) What cauthions are you aware of that I may not be? In the "real world" (whatever that is) what good methods of avoiding angle problems exist? I appreciate your help very much. ---Michael |

I do a chair suspension and you can almost do it completely surrounded where you can not do that with the magic carpet.

I am with terry on this one. believe it or not I have NEVER seen a performer use the carpet live. and that is probably the reason why

I just bought the chair. You can use both with adults, just buy a more expensive and sturdy chair for people over 100 lb.
I bought the chair because it is more versatile and easier to transport. Here is a current thread on both: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......forum=17 I would definitely buy Kyle's ebook on the chair before you make your decision. http://www.magicenhancer.com/ChairSuspension.html |

Too Much,
This is not a comment on your ability at all. I know a web site does not necessarily show ability, but . . . just compare this teen's website with your own . . . His looks awful nice. Perhaps he can design one for you (and me). - Sorry, it was too easy. Somehow I thought we were supposed to promote magic - especially with the young, not try to step all over them, especially when they are so accomplished, at such an age. MagicalOdyssey, I have used my new chair suspension 6-7 times now, and every time I get gasps from some of the ADULTS. I think it is obvious how it is done, so I try to throw them off the trail. I tell them I am going to make the child vanish. I have another child (as small as possible) come up and go through a bunch of magic motions, trying to make them vanish. The other child is still there. Then I get the small child to "hold up" one side while I remove the chair so I can sit down and think of a new magic motion. This is when the adults get nervous - afraid the small child will drop the other child! Then, I see their concern and take the end from the small child. While doing so I "accidentally" drop the board. This is where the adults ALWAYS gasp. Then I do a "look & don't see" that the child is floating. . . I get down on the ground below the child looking for what the kids are screaming about. I always (in the 7 show sample *G*) have adults remark about how good that piece was. The kids, they love it. Just be careful with it. |

The choice should be between the Chair Suspension and the Super-X Suspension, not the Magic Carpet. If you are going to drag a Carpet around, you might as well go for the more deceptive Super-X, which you can perform anywhere you can perform the Carpet. Furthermore, if you lay your Super-X board on the backs of chairs, you can make everyone THINK you are doing a chair suspension... until you pull away that second chair.
But this is all moot. All of the above suspensions are a pain in the derriere to lug around, set up, and guard the secrets, etc. The Cloak of Invisibility by "he who must not be named" (but whose initials are J.R.) or the Broom Suspension by Andrew Mayne are quick, easy, and transportable.

Here is a picture of me performing the magic carpet MagicalOdyssey. Note to original poster: I mader the carpet larger and it has some drawbacks like; setting up in front of people is awkward, kids tend to try to look under it, you have to place the kid in the middle (tough on back). The best feature: You have a magic carpet that kids can fly on. It is great for up selling your show.

I mentioned this on a previous thread.
If you replace the seat with a board that the kid could lie down on, you have a floating illusion that looks a lot more convincing than the chair suspension ... (IMO). I did see an ad for one where a kind of box was constructed to fit around the gazzarous somehow so that the gimmick could not be seen from any angle. The flying carpet may be a hassle in a living room, but I think that it beats the chair suspension hands down on a stage setting. I used it in school shows for several years and it always got wows. |

Jakeg,
I think the carpet looks better too, but I understand it can be quite a pain. I think the chair can go a long way, but it is more reliant on presentation. Then again, the chair is a pain to lug around too, just not as much. Professor, Can you speak more about the "Broom Suspension"? I have heard little of it, but mostly that it is good. How transportable is it? How easy is it to set up. I assume you have to make it yourself? I assume you cannot have an audience member do it? |

You'll find "Broom Flight" explained and demonstrated on Andrew Mayne's "Wizard School" DVD. It requires a broom (which may be borrowed), a banner, towel or large silk... and you as the Wizard/Witch/Pilot. Do it quick and they'll be amazed. Don't attempt to fly around the room on it.

Roger's cloth of invisibility is no problem to carry....but it must be practiced to carry it off. Some hate this effect, some love it. I think it's all about presentation and preference of style...i.e., to each their own. It's worth getting the Blackpool notes to read up on it.
I prefer not to have these suspensions, as over the years I'm simply not into lugging these around, and depend on other routines as "finales" to my show. I'm not going to bash these levitations, it's up to you if you want one. Roger's is simply much easier to carry. Andrew Mayne's book with the levitations is well worth the cost as is practical as all get out. I highly recommend this as well. I still find myself looking at Mark Wilson's work for practical levitations as well, though most are not "one man". Wathing the videos I'm always amazed at "Rebo's" now how and ingenuity! My honest first pick would be Mayne's book to give you a taste of the workings and practicallity issues. I've also heard rumors about a "packs flat" flying carpet that was custom made. I admit I got pretty envious when I heard the tantalizing description of this! |

Hi,
This is my first post so please be gentle with me! Seems like you guys can get mean! I am also looking at purchasing the chair suspension. I guess there are different versions. Which would you recommend and where can I get the best price. Thanks. |

Personally, I think they're both weak ... having said that, I agree that the chair suspension is the more practical of the two. But expect them to yell, "Take the other chair away!" The little creeps are never satisfied ...
The one I would recommend you probably can't afford. Keep your eyes on MagicAuction.com as they pop up frequently. I think you can get them new for around $400, and maybe 2/3 that used if you're lucky. And I hope you change your opinion that people are mean here. Most are not. But many of us have a history with others on this board and tease one another, which may seem like being mean to newbies. This is actually a really good group of people for the most part. I little PC, and sometimes oversensitive, but nice jsut the same. |

I know you technically weren't knocking me cuz that's not my site, but I figured I should point that out anyhow. (And if you need a website let me know. Magicians helping magicians.) Third... I was pointing out through the use of sarcastic humor, that this kid has obviously not seen a lot...because I know for a fact there are a crap load of magicians using that particular effect. His post was in effect saying, no one uses this because I have never seen it. I have never seen a million dollars but that doesn't mean....you know. I did not in any way question his credentials nor did I step on anything, only the fallacies in his argument, thus doing my part to help progress the discussion. |

What is the expensive one?
Maybe I can afford it! Why is it better? Thank you. |
