Here's my latest video project, a short documentary "Respect For Magic", about my buddy Robert Moreland. Robert is an absolutely excellent close up guy, and this features his thoughts and a performance, including the Cloud Change.
It's part of the John Tudor's Magic Theater documentary/show done in cooperation with SC ETV. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uSQP8Ab0sAo (It's still a rough cut, you'll see the lighting is so-so...comments are very welcome!)

I love Rob Morelands brain, it's even better live! But just from watching that you can see his creativity, and I think he is one of the most underrated guys in the world of Magic!

Yeah Robbie! The kid has mad game. He makes Billy Dee Williams look rough. Glad to finally see more of his work hitting the Interweb.

John,
When will this air on SC ETV? ~John |
John Tudor Loyal user Columbia, SC 209 Posts |
John,
Part of it already has! What you currently see on Youtube is made up of an interview and a performance. The performance section (in the theater) aired in late 2005 and several times in 2006. The interview material was shot after a lecture in Charleston, SC, and has never been broadcast (shot by Joey Vasquez, and edited by Alan Geoghegan) The original production included five other magicians, including myself. It was done by the ETV affiliate, and I hired three additional camera people to shoot behind the scenes. For a variety of reasons the broadcast of the final show with performances and behind the scenes kept getting delayed and stalled altogether, so...I decided to roll it out bit by bit on the web. There is a rough cut of the demo for the final show at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmWAH1m62ns The next segment will probably be posted in about three weeks. Robbie and I have been gratified with the response, it's gotten 1075 views as of today, that's just over two weeks. Robbie also says that he has gotten quite a direct response from young magicians emailing their material to him! We'll let you know when the broadcast happens. Thanks for your kind words, John

Robbie's magic is truly a joy to behold. He has a soft touch with both cards and coins that is very rarely seen these days. When you watch Robbie work, you're watching real magic in progress.

Thanks, guys!
The future interview/performance segments will feature Glenn Strange, Tim Sonefelt, Dave Tanner, Sarah Straney, and myself. There is also a general "making of" dvd that will appear sometime this fall, which will follow the creation of the show from it's inception with lots of "how to for TV" information. Actually, I kept waiting for the broadcast to happen before starting on that part of the project, (a mistake) and now I'm re-starting the whole thing - you can see why the big response has been so gratifying! (But then, as Robbie says, "don't believe the hype.") Oh, and to those who mentioned it, yes, we are very aware of the strange color of the performance segment. The lighting was very poor for the ETV shoot in general, as the designer I hired really didn't understand TV camera requirements and it was too late to replace him. The final production will be digitally fixed so it looks better. One tip: try never to have to shoot a live performance in front of a big, bright yellow curtain... John

What do you mean? Does the yellow curtain make it hard to balance the light on the subject? Or does the yellow bleed? Yes, and yes, the bright yellow makes it hard to balance the light on the subject- and yes, the bright yellow sort of glows outward a bit, it doesn't "bleed" so much as it "blooms". Makes it harder for the camera to balance itself. PS Be aware I have only a basic knowledge of this, just passing along what the director explained to me!

Hey Gang,
Joe, Eric, Brett: thanks for the kinds words fellas. Magic would not be half as fun if it were not for pals like you. I have been doing a lot of networking online since the John released this video and all I can say is thanks to John and to all of you for the kind response. I think I have had more intelligent conversations in the last few weeks than I have had in the last 2 years and it has done wonders for my typing speed. I have kids from all over sending me vids of there work some are good and some are unbelievable. So thanks again gang. You have opened Pandora's box for me and I am loving every minute. Move along, Robbie http://www.myspace.com/illusiveactions http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=RMoreland1 |
