When by myself I have a Show-Tech for sound, but otherwise I currently run music off a CD, and have for some time.
Lately I've been running a lot of sound cues -- over 65 -- and some of them can be out of order. I'll admit I'm a bit of a dinosaur, and I don't know much about equipment that accesses digital files, like mp3's. Here's what I want to know: What is the current best way to randomly access different songs/SFX? I want to move to a system easier for my sound person to access. |

Well, you DID ask for the BEST way! Short of arranging your audio cues in the correct order, here's the "best" answer I know of. $2700.

Unfortunately, the nature of my show does NOT allow for arranging them in order...and sometimes requires going back to a previous audio. Now, how about a reasonable way at a reasonable price? Remember, I do have a sound person, but instantly jumping from audio #3 to #65 isn't always easy. |

So you're saying you have material that requires access to any sound cue at any time? So you need some sort of sound board hardware or software running on a computer that does the same thing?
If you've got a computer or laptop as part of your sound equipment, take a look at the info on this page of my website: http://remotelaptop.tripod.com/Sound_Board/sound_board.html I give you two options that are pretty inexpensive to start with. I have also found software that is used by announcers in ball parks to play their cues...you know, all the funny little sound bytes they'll play in between batters. It keeps track of what cues have been used in a game, so the announcer doesn't repeat one, and has other features for that unique environment. I can dig that one up if you're interested. Jeff |

That looks interesting...thanks. Quite a coincidence that they use a game show as the example, as a game show is exactly what I need this for!
Right now, I'm playing around with a CD burning program that I already have. It's got a "preview" button that plays a highlighted track. By preparing a song list (whose intention is really to prepare to burn a CD), I can simply click the song and it plays. I think this may be as simple as anything, although it's not the intended purpose of the program. Then again, since when do magicians use things for their intended purposes? |

The 360 system is what we used oh so long ago in my days on morning radio for SFX and things.

Has anyone ever seen Jim Cramer's Mad Money on CNBC? He has this sound board with big red buttons that he pounds on randomly throughout the show. I couldn't find a picture online, but if you've seen the show you know what I'm talking about.
I would LOVE to have a board like that for my act. |

I found one solution for that, and it's probably similar to what Jim Cramer is using. This company makes hardware for museum installations. You load up a compact flash card on a PC and plug it into the device, wire up a bunch of buttons to it, then you assign the buttons to different sound effects.
http://www.alcorn.com/products/dam/index.html This is way too expensive for what you need, but it's probably what they're using on TV, or something very similar. Maybe someone here can find a less expensive version of this kind of hardware out there. I couldn't turn it up in my search, but then I might not have used the right search terms. |

Check out http://www.drs2006.com It is free radio software, and it has what is called a digital cart machine - basically a screen of buttons and it plays when you click on the button, kind of like the 360 instant replay, except it is software and it is free. I have used it, and it works well.
