From the IJA website:

Pittsburgh , Tuesday, June 17, 1947

"... jugglers made their way to the stylish William Penn Hotel on Grant Street in Pittsburgh for a juggling session under the auspices of the International Brotherhood of Magicians.

During the afternoon of the first day they drifted in, registered and found their rooms. Despite the difficulty of finding each other in the great crowd of magicians, they began bumping into old friends and introducing themselves to strangers they found carrying balls or clubs. Several got together for a juggling session in the empty ballroom before dinner. After a disappointing magic show in the evening, in which Art Jennings's comedy was the high point, most of the jugglers ended up at Thompson's restaurant around the corner. They pulled four tables together and shot the breeze until four in the morning."

So began the first 'official' meeting of jugglers from across the nation. This coming week it'll all happen again. This time it's Winston-Salem, NC that will be the meeting place for the jugglers and many things haven't changed over the past 60 years because I'm very sure that groups of jugglers will gather here and there about town, staying up til the wee hours of the morning swapping jackpots about shows they never did. I'll be there along with my associate, 'Steve' Alfredo Fettucini, where we are proud to host and MC the opening night Welcome Show for the convention. I'm hoping that all of y'all can come and share in the camaraderie that has grown from a gathering of Brother Magicians. I have a feeling that it's going to be a good one. Hope to see you there ...

Ciao for now,

Alfresco Fettucini

We sure will, Al. Is it OK if we drink one beer for ya?

Please have a few. Is Miss. Tilley still a regular at IJA conventions? Talk to Jackie Erickson "Mr. E" about attending our Philadelphia convention in October. If you see Melinda from Baltimore there tell her I said hi.

Hey Al,
Miz Tilley, has not attended an IJA in some time. I did see her at he last Motionfest a few years ago. And good times were had by all. I've been workiing with John, as a tech. consultant on the shows... In fact, funny you should mention Jackie E, as he and John are making the trip and driving down together to NC , probably as I type this.

I'm back at the beach so here's a quick update. All the shows were great. We MC'd the Welcome Show along with a terrific cast: David Deeble, Matt Hall, Ivan Pecel, Jen Slaw, AJ Silver, Wes and Jeff Peden (Airplay) and Tony Pezzo. Our new hat routine was tight and received nice comments after the show. Dan Holzman directed all the shows and did yeoman's work.

I met and got to know, Paul Bachman, Tommy Curtain, and many other great jugglers of the past and present. I got some new K-8 clubs. The Cascade of Stars show was packed with talent. The Peapot Jugglers, Get The Shoe (my favorite), that sailor guys act (very good), Peter Davison, Fire Act Guy from Cirque du Soleil, Francois Rochelle (my NEW favorite - I hope I spelled her name correct...), and Victor Kee.

I helped judge the Individual Prop Competition and saw many amazing things. The Seniors and Teams Competition turned out exactly as I predicted. I lost my Starbucks cup and a pair of cheap sunglasses. I found a lonely screaming slingshot monkey so I brought it home (you know what I'm talking about).

Paul Bachman’s History Lounge had to be seen. Paul brought a part of his impressive collection of juggling props and memorabilia. Tommy Curtain told me stepped in to look for a few minutes and found later he had spent several hours taking it all in. It can happen.

The Embassy Suites Managers Reception was sorely lacking. Cocktails OK but the hors devours were few and bad and were wiped out within 20 minutes. That was our first experience with that from them. Expected better.

The venue for the Midnight Cabaret’ (OK Renegade, if you want) was super for a show. It was a huge government building and a close walk from everything. The first night didn’t exactly get off to a flamin’ start and the 2nd night I fell asleep at the suite and woke up too late. The 3rd night I fell asleep but it was at the ‘show’. The room was too hot, the chairs were uncomfortable and I wasn’t drinking enough to make the acts seem any better. There was no show Friday night (Why? I don’t know – it would have been perfect …). And I came back to the beach yesterday so I missed the Awards Banquet and the last Midnight Show.

All in all this was the best convention ever for me for so many reasons (which I won’t list now). I want to thank my ‘brother’, Steve “Alfredo” Fettucini, for all that he did to help with his volunteering to the IJA and doing our little thing on stage. It was great to see all of y’all that I saw there.

Aloha-ha,
Back at the beach,
Cap’n Mike Heidtman
