Hey guys not sure exactly where I should post this so I figured since my website is video related I thought this would be a good start. Anyway after not updating my website for a looooooooooong time I started messing around with it recently and wanted to get your opinions. Right now there is not much to it but figured it would be easier to make changes while I am still working on the foundation. Also tell me what you think of the doman name and the slogan. I use to own theillusionist.com but when the movie came out they contacted me and purchased it from me so I had to go out and think of something new. Thanks again for your help and if this is not the correct forum please point me in the proper direction.

Hi Sean,

Well I guess a website is designed for who you want to look at it. I designed mine with flash and custom graphics in adobe. I do this because I want my clients to be impressed when they come and visit me. If I just want my friends to come and see, sure I want them to be impressed but they are not going to pay me in the future. I think of a website as something I can always do better and somewhere to practice the art of website making. Yours looks good so far! If you need any tips or anything just let me know and you can check out mine so you can see what I am somewhat talking about. Oh by the way how much did they buy your website for? I would have held out for it!

Hey guys thanks for the feedback. I know I definitely need to add more content and to focus more on the target audience. Right now it seems to be more directed at friends/family vs. potential clients. However I am thinking of this being more of an entertaining website vs. a resume like website - am I making sense?

Justin, I like your intro and your logo - pretty smooth. My only concerns with doing a site with flash and other types of plug-ins was that I wanted to keep it as simple and clean as possible while still having a somewhat professional feel. One reason is for loading purposes and the other is because of the different 'standards' that are out there. For example when I visited your site on my work CPU running IE 6.0 (unfortunately we are not allowed to upgrade our pc’s to the most recent version) the text on your site was all over the place and outside the 'black box'. Now I am sure that if I go on my home CPU everything will look fine. That is one reason I was even hesitant to place a QuickTime file on my site since most people use wmv files.

As far as my previous website goes I was negotiating with them for several months - their initial offer was ~100. After a couple of months I noticed they had purchased several derivatives of theillusionist.com (themovietheillusionist.com theillusionistthemovie.com etc.) so they contacted me once more before they had the posters printed up with the website on them to see if I was interested anymore. I eventually sold it to them for ~1000 plus some other ancillary benefits thrown in (posters, soundtrack, and VIP tickets to the premiere - to name a few). At the time I wasn’t doing much with the website and was in the process of preparing to pay for my upcoming wedding. Needless to say I am pretty happy with my new website domain name; however theillusionist.com will always provide a good story to tell at parties.

Robert - thanks for that other Mitch quote, I think I will use that one next. He is soooo great.

I think if your site is just for family and friends then the site is fine.
But when you mentioned that "... I wanted to keep it as simple and clean as possible while still having a somewhat professional feel." I felt that you might have plans to make this a professional site for potential clients.

If that is the case I would suggest outlining and storyboarding your site. You only have 3 seconds to make a good impression on the web and less than 2 minutes to convince your potential client that you are what they need.
