Review- Anabelle Taylor's "Beneath The Mask."
Anabelle Taylor has a new ebook. And I am very thankful she sent it to me for a review. "Beneath the mask" is a thirty page pdf book of eleven effects; seven of them are original effects of Anabelle Taylor's, one is an adaptation of a David Regal effect and there are three "bonus effects," by Alexander. The introduction ends with the sentence "One last thing ... keep in mind that these routines should be performed in the spirit of creating reality." All in all it was allot of fun to read. Most of the work is very direct, as I believe mental effects should be. I am also happy to report that the majority of the material can be used close up. I have read allot of threads here that seem to be searching for more close up mental material. I read the book yesterday morning and I was already using two effects last night. I am also playing around with a few others for adapting my own versions. Ms. Taylor's voice makes for a very nice read. She is honest and direct and knows how to weave a web of mystery. She shows how strong simple methods can become through wording and presentation. All in all I find the book very refreshing. The first effect made me smile, I knew I was in for a treat as it is based on a card principle I have been using since I was twelve, and still use today, a very simple principle that confounds all laymen. Her take on presentation is simple, direct, and disarming. If I was to write a short book of close up mentalism I don't think I could find a better card effect to open with. It sets the tone for what is to come. Basically the idea here is that you don't need to confuse your audience with complexity, that through presentation the most direct method is always best. I am not going to go into every effect, but I will talk a little about my favourites. The second piece is one you could easily do over the phone and involves any objects lying around. The third effect I have never seen before. She calls it The Spiritual Caliber and once I understood how it plays out I knew it would be a killer piece to have in my arsenal. I am not sure what Spiritual Caliber means. I break it down to having something to do with rating your own spirituality, I find the name confusing, so I wouldn't use it, but the method is fantastic. The first time I read the method I was a little confused and had to go over the whole thing again. It is based on a method by George Sands that I never have read, some of you will know the basis for the method already. In The first paragraph of the "Dirty Little Secret" section of this effect Ms. Taylor says "As you can probably imagine there are many things you can do with this, so if you like it, I suggest you get your imagination going and create a couple of awesome presentations for this." Which is what I have been doing. This is one you will all want to use. The next effect is a memory opener titled, "Anabelle's Memory Opener." Its simple its direct, its a card effect, and I used it twice already. Its great and I am glad to have it. Most of the rest of the book is material you can use close up or on stage. There is a wonderful effect with a Rubik's Cube I will be looking into. I don't know what I did with my cube. One of Alexanders card effects is very dubious as a phone experiment. He also has an effect that reminds one that some of the most direct effects we already know can be made even stronger, and shows how one could score a date using such an effect. His section ends with a very strong Tarot bit. All in all I recommend this ebook to performers of mentalism who like to get that reaction where they look at you with the awe of a child, with the question in their mind "I wonder how you obtain this amazing ability." I don't yet know what the price will be, or have a link, so hopefully Anabelle will chime in and let those who ask know where to go to get a copy. Stuart Palm, July 2007

I'm flattered and it makes me so happy that you've enjoyed it. Thank you so much! The Spiritual Caliber is supposed to show you how spiritually balanced you are currently in your life, and with that knowledge you become "spiritually calibrated". It made sense to me at the time and I've always performed it that way.

HaHa, that's fantastic. But who will tell them where to move. Will it be children and one adult?

It is too bad this got moved here. I think it would be better to have left it on the penny forum. I guess I should have left "ebook review," out of the title. As other ebook reviews and discussions seem to go unmoved. Have you tried out the star force Dr. Z?

It's really worth the small sum being asked for it. There's really some useable effects offered.

I got this ebook last night...I like it!
There are some nice bits of close-up mentalism that I will use, well worth the small price asked. Aidan |
