Magic has some fairly deep rooted issues as regards derivative works and a scheme for passing on performance, manufacturing and IP propagation rights.
It's much simpler to start by contacting the inventor or their delegate or... as is the case with some items, just buy the authorized plans and then ask the inventor or delegate for help as needed. Some folks reserve manufacturing rights to their works. Just because you can get someone else to build you a copy of such a work does not make that transaction a good thing.

Its not a bad thing when you give credit to the inventor of the routine as I seen in so many videos & books. When I`m showing some things my closest freinds I tell them who is credited to the moves I use.
theres a lot to learn out there, many interesting subjects, and hobbies to enjoy

Martin Lewis put out two videos called Making Magic. He performed each effect and explained in detail the workings and how to make ONE FOR YOURSELF. Buying the video gives you the right to build one for yourself not a hundred for profit. There is where ethics come into play. One can spend a lot of time and money sueing these people to get them to stop but, you must find them first. They don't stop even if you catch them in the act of selling it. They reason that you really can't do anything about it, so they blatantly continue because they have a market for their junk. If the cost is what keeps people buying knockoffs, then I'm sorry that you don't see what it costs to produce an effect. The creator pays for materials, labor, packaging and shipping. They may sell some outright at lectures or magic conventions but, they must sell to the wholesalers like Murphys, L&L, Hank Lee and so on, at a much reduced rate because wholesalers want to make a profit too. The answer is, DON'T buy knockoffs no matter how cheap the price. If you do that, you will put these people out of business. If you do buy their merchandise, you are only empowering them to go on stealing. I am a builder of quality magic and I only build for the creator of the effects. I do not like knockoff builders and will expose them when I see them.

Interesting to see this post gain life again.
Abe while I agree with your position I think creator/builders have harmed themselves. As an example most people will point to the Zig Zag as the worst of the rip off cases in magic. It is true this was a very popular illusion and many builders were producing them. I would guess that most of them didn't have any permission from Harbin to make it but many big name builders were cranking them out. They were of high quality and could hardly be called junk yet they were still a knock off. With this type of history it is really hard to single out the European or Domestic builders selling on-line. A market exists for the average income person looking to include an illusion or two in a show but they can not afford the 4 to 5 grand for each illusion. Find another way to service this market and we will be closer to stopping the rip offs.

An ethical code is always difficult to enforce when it comes to money.

Ickle Pickle put out an absolute piece of trash, a poor copy of Martin Lewis's Big Switch card and had the nerve to put on the cover sheet, "As seen on a Martin Lewis Video". I showed it to Martin and it upset him. I now build the Big Switch card and if you watch his making magic video you will see how it is made. These props take time to make and sell for the same price as the knockoff. I don't build major illussions so I don't know the cost of material and labor but, if you are buying an illussion form a wholesaler, they set the price and neither the inventor nor the builder has anything to do with that. I perform what I can afford, buying the new hot thing is not always an option. There is a tremendous amount of magic out there on both sides of the pond. I feel your frustration with the high prices, shipping cost, taxes and whatever it takes to get a good illussion from the U.S. Keep the dialog going and we just might solve the promlem.

It really is difficult for the purchaser to know if an effect or item has the approval of the originator. Perhaps the industry needs something similar to the "Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval" and if you see the icon you know it's legit? Or does always dealing thru a B&M shop guarantee the same?
Also known, when doing rope magic, as "Cordini"
