These are basically the same movie, both directed by Howard Hawks and both starring The Duke.
Which time do you think they got it right? http://www.combustiblecelluloid.com/eldorado.shtml http://www.imagesjournal.com/issue10/infocus/riobravo.htm

75% of the movies in theaters today are remakes - ask an old geezer like me and the old one is the definitive version, ask some twenty-or-less-something and the new one is WAY cooler than the old one.
They're remaking SLEUTH (badly), they're remaking INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS _again_ (as if the second [Donald Sutherland] version wasn't bad enough), they remade THE WICKER MAN incredibly badly ... the list goes on and on. |

Some remakes _do_ work though, I understand the definitive "Maltese Falcon" with Bogart and Greenstreet was actually the second remake of the film. The Maltese Falcon was made in the 20s (with a very young Bette Davis in the Mary Astor role) and then remade as "The Devil's Horn" where everything but the basic plot was changed to avoid having to pay for the rights. Then finally they got it right.

Jerrine,
Thanks, for returning to the topic, I didn't intend to start a general discussion of remakes, just wondered which of these two everyone liked better. By the way, I'm with you, Rio Bravo. Rio Bravo-2, El Dorado-0

Rio Bravo hands down in any area you can think of.
El Dorado is tired and in the area of worst amatuer special effects ever it takes the cake for that phoney Horse leap. It's ok but just. Rio Bravo: Dean Martin as the drunk law man was dead on and beautifully played on a few levels...Stumpy firing on him because he got a bath and a new hat and his subsequent reaction is Walter Brennan at his best ever. Drama, Action, Comedy, Music, what an entertaining show. The 'impromptu' song with Martin and Nelson is terrific stuff...Waynes dealing with Martin's self pity is finely scripted and wonderfully played by both actors. El Dorado was just another western...Rio Bravo is one of the best ever. And in conclusion my friends...any movie that has a finale where the bad guys are systimatically blown to smithereens with sticks of dynamite...well, there ya go. I rest my case.

Well the Duke had a tendency to make the same move many times in a row!
People expected it of him as a matter of fact. Personally I really enjoyed the War Wagon, as it diverged from a classic western story line just a bit. The Shootist was a fantastic movie if you ask me, and I did like True Grit, and even Rooster Cogburn was pretty good. Often movies are remade, but not too often by the same person. Charleton Heston was in the new Planet of the Apes movie, AS AN APE! All and all I liked Rio Bravo. (Big Jake was my favorite though)

Rio Bravo. My earliest TV memories included Walter Brennan's early sitcom, The Real McCoys, and Ward Bond as the Wagonmaster on Wagon Train. They were two of my favorites and I especially loved Walter's portrayal of Stumpy in Rio Bravo. Definitely the better of the two even though Ricky Nelson's acting skills were on a par level with Elvis'...and that is not meant as a compliment.

War Wagon should have been about 15 minutes long. Chase a wagon for 2 hours? When all you ned do is shoot the lead horse? Really dumb.

Yea but the interaction with Douglas and Wayne was pretty cool. THAT was what the movie was about, not the gold.

As far as John Wayne "doing the same film over again." It is true he liked certain stock bits. Leigh Brackett, a science fiction writer who worked in Hollywood and did some scripts for John mentions that one film (Neither Rio Bravo nor El Dorado) had a problem with the resolution. Wayne looked at the writing team and said; "We'll do the prisoner exchange." Brackett piped up; "John, we've done it twice already." and Wayne responded; "It works, doesn't it?"
As far as "War Wagon" is concerned. They can't just "shoot the lead horse" because they still have to deal with the two teams of riders not to mention that Gatling Gun installed in the turrent. I think I read somewhere that Wayne and (Howard Hawks?) ment "Rio Bravo" as a direct response to "High Noon" which ticked both of them off. I liked "Rio Bravo" much better than "El Dorado"

I liked Rio Bravo much better than High Noon.
High Noon didn't even make my top 50...it's somewhere around the Western's with Van Heflin.) Shoot the lead horse first...then the rest of the horses as well...and the outriders would have to make a stand. Shoot the lead horse in the proper terrain and the gatling gun is a non issue. Let 'em bake in the sun.

Well, maybe. But then you have a 15 minute movie.
My big bugaboo with "War Wagon." I can't tell you without spoiling the film. But suffice to say it has to do with the fact that gold is toxic. Where does the gold end up? Where does where the gold ends up, end up?

So far it looks like it's 10-0 for Rio Bravo, I guess we should all be grateful that "High Noon" P---ed off Hawks enough to goad him into reworking the "El Dorado" plot.
