Hey all. Well...now's about the time to start sending the promo kits to get booked for the holiday season. I was just wondering about the legalites of sending them to some local companies/businesses.
I'm thinking of sending my promo kit to banks, law firms, local businesses, etc. Any place that could possibly use a magician (as well as past clients). Just to say, I HIGHLY doubt that anyone would take any action, other than throw it out if they;re uninterested. I'm just looking to see if any other magicians do the same thing. Also, what do YOU put in your press/promo kit? Thanks. Steve |

There is nothing illegal about sending your kit to a business, unless of course you include samples of ANTHRAX in your promo kit or something like that.
However, that could be expensive to send your kit out to everyone. First, I would send out a lead generation letter. Then, everyone who responds to that can receive a promo kit. That way, you are spending the money on a qualified lead, not taking a stab in the dark.

That's what I thought. I told one of my friends that, and he was like "you better check on that, it's like soliciting them or something."
No one would do anything. period. As for a letter, that's a good idea. I'll probably end up doing that. Thanks! Steve |

Hi Steve -
Business to business selling / marketing is ok. It's business to home that has some snags. Like Brent, I recommend against sending a promo kit to people who aren't genuinely interested. (BTW, I've tried it before. It was a waste of resources.) Use a smaller, less expensive mailing first. Letter, postcard, flyer, etc. Even better, call first to find out who to send it to, so you can follow-up on your mailing with a phone call, etc. You can also ensure your mailing gets into the right hands of a decision maker. - Donald P.S. If you wish, direct them to your website in the mailing. Use your website as a "virtual promo kit" to make the bigger impact you are wishing for.

Interesting Donald. Put all my promo material on my site, with kinda a virtual tour. That could actually be cheaper for me, and easier for the client.
Thanks! Steve |

Here's another challenging thought for you. Many performers sell their show, without the customer ever seeing a promo kit, or a website. You use your rapport and selling skills on the phone, or in person.
To think you "need to" post your promo kit online, or send it in the mail, to close the sale, means you might possibly be looking for a "crutch" outside yourself. Have more confidence in yourself. Yes, it is true that some people want more information in order to make a decision, but not all. Try to close it first, without sending the kit. - Donald

The lead generation materials I send out piques their interest, and also points them to my website, which acts as a "virtual brochure."
Usually, by the time they call me, they have already looked at the website. I rarely have to send anything more. And I have about a 70% close rate on the first incoming call.

OF COURSE it's soliciting them! That's what sales is! And everyone uses mail to well! Now, if you use FAX that could creat a problem, as there are lwas against that.

Steve,
The very first very large corporate client for magic I had was the world's largest residential mortgage company and it was also an insurance company. I did entertainment for their employee Christmas party. The gig lasted two years! You have to start somewhere! Nothing happens until you get into motion. Go for it! Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Bob is so right. The biggest hurdle anyone has to overcome on the road to success is a little thing I like to call "Taking Action". hehe It seems silly but that is so true. So many people want success but are not willing to go out there and take action upon themselves to reach for it and grab it. I hope that you choose to.
