This isn't for me, but I'm looking for a printer or company that does things like color brochures (like tri-folds), envelopes and stationery, and similar things; reasonably low runs, good prices, and good service. We know about (and use) PrintsMadeEasy.com, but as far as I can tell they don't do brochures yet.
Any recommendations? Thanks much.

I'm using them for my posters. So far, it's been easy and hassle-free. Their prices aren't too bad either. Best. Steve |

Thanks once more!
Posted: Nov 1, 2007 7:10pm Just to follow up on this, and hoping someone can give me a reality check... We went with psprint (the Oakland office) and sent them PDF's generated from InDesign CS3 according to the set-up specs on the psprint Web site. We asked for a proof. About a week later, we got an e-mail saying the brochures were ready. The proof never came. When I went to pick them up (all 5,000 of them), part of the lettering was not visible, and they told me it was an "overprint error" on their part. Then they offered to send me an overnight proof and re-print the whole thing a day later. Today I received the proof, and it looked just about exactly like the printed brochures: you still could not see part of the wording. So I spoke with them and they said that there's an "overprint" setting in CS3 (which was not indicated on their set-up specs) which tells the press whether to print the color over the type or at the same time, and that I needed to send them a new file with this setting corrected. I don't know why a .pdf file would include an "overprint" setting. However, what I did say to them was that I didn't understand why someone at their end didn't notice that what came out of the press didn't look like the customer's file -- twice. It was really funny that the guy didn't respond to this; it was like he knew I was right but couldn't admit it. We're about to cancel the order and send our business elsewhere, but I wanted to see if any of this rings any bells with any of you, especially the part about the "overprint" setting coming through on a .pdf. Thanks much.

I've used http://www.zooprinting.com several times and have been very pleased.
When I've sent them a .pdf file, they've always sent me an email proof in less then 24 hours. The materials seem to get to me within a week. So for me, they've been quick and inexpensive. |

George: As a professional graphic designer and illustrator for years, I have been in your shoes and know exactly what you are talking about. As you are probably aware overprinting is part of what is called production or trapping at the printer. Every single printer I have designed stuff for and use daily (over hundreds of them) never ever want the person to do trapping themselves. The reason is that the printer always has to run it through their own trapping and production ste up based on the printer and systems they run for their final work.
every system is entirely different so that even if you did set up trapping to overprint 1) they would take and remove it any ways 2) they would run it through their own production dept. and 3) they would apply their own trapping to the file based on their own needs. I have never dealt with trapping concerns nor have I had to apply them myself. if a printer comes to me asking me to do it, I refuse to and send my work elsewhere. It basically means that printer does not know how to do their job right or they are trying to push the production process off to you so they are not liable for it. You did the smart thing here. I tell every magician and client I design for to always always ask for a proof before they do the main run. This is your chance to check that they have it set up right. If your final run is NOT matching the proof you signed and ok'd then you are not responsible for paying it and they should run it over for you again at no cost to you. So no you should not have to worry about an overprint setting on your file at all. that issomething they should be checking and handling themselves. Hope this helps George. Kyle

Looks like I'll be having a talk with them tomorrow. In the meantime, psprint is on my doo-doo list.

Most welcome George. My pleasure. I have not used PS Print but I had them on a list to check out. I will certainly be crossing them off that list if that is how they conduct business and the production dept. Let me know how it goes and if I can be of further help to you.
It is nice to be able to help and assist you for a change. Your columns and articles I have enjoyed somuch as I come from a creative background likeyourself and your way of thinking about magic is very much like my own. Please keep writing and I will keep reading and learning. Kyle

Thanks Rodney for the kind words my friend. I have been very happy with using and referring overnightprints.com for printng my clients design work. they have not let me down yet and I pretty much put them through a lot of testing. I wanted a place that had 1) great quality 2) can hold colors accurately 3) great customer service 4) easy website for uploading 5) great prices and 6) greta turn around time. So far they have succeeded in every category.
This is not to say there are not other online printers out there that do a good job. I just happen to really like what overnightprints.com has given to me and my design clients so far. If your current printer is not working and can not fix the issue for you, give them a try and see what they might be able to do for you George. Rodney: Thanks again for your words and I did receive your latest email and will try and write you back sometime today. I look foprward working on the deisgn for your new business cards and possibly stationary and I am so glad thta the posters came out great. =) Kyle

You're welcome for the thank-you, Kyle. Glad you enjoy my columns. Which reminds me... I'm overdue for another one.
Actually, I tried overnightprints, but they told me they don't do 8-1/2 x 14, which is the size we're using. I also checked out a couple of other places, but psprint had the best prices. I guess I need to do some catching up on printing (sigh). I just figured when I sent them the .pdf, they would scan it and do a color separation like in the old days, but from what you said, Kyle, it looks like the process has changed, so what you see isn't necessarily what you get. Sigh again.

You are most welcome George. I have always enjoyed your writings as they inspire creativity. Creativity in magic is something I am really strive to teach myself and use in everything I perform. They should have been able to work straight from the PDf file itself. In most cases the PDf file can be converted directly into a high resolution.jpg file that can be run easily. I am just not sure why they were handling it for you the way they were, if you have any mre printer questions or design questions, just let me know. I would be happy to assist.
Mindpro: You are most welcome for the information. I hope it is of some help to you. If you have any questions regarding graphic design or online printers, let me know. Jaynet: let me look at my resources and see what poster places I can possibly find for you. Kyle
