In the film Casino DeNero blows on a dice and makes it spin between his fingers, I can't do that can you do that? How do you do it?

I've seen a number of people do it but can never get it to work myself.

I can do it. It just takes a light touch. Maybe I'll make you a little tutorial. And you must use razor edge dice, I can't do it at all with drugstore dice.

One quick tip, hold the cube in your fingers and spin it with a finger from the opposite hand. When you can get it to spin freely with a loose grip. It will spin when you blow on it.

It's very easy with razor edge dice. Vandy's right, you just need to hold the die lightly.

There is no gimmick. I've seen a video clip of someone doing it. I can't get the hang of it either.

Tommy, ill post a vid once I get my camera running... its more of a knack.. when you hold the dice, blow on the side as opposed to directly... usually the same side as the hand holding the dice...

Ha! I was going to post about that. In the very beginning I suggest that people forget about blowing on the dice alltogether. Just spin it in your fingers until you get the feel and can get it to turn loosely. Then start working on blowing on the dice.

If you don't you will either blow until you are dizzy and the thing won't budge. Or you will just blow the thing right out of your hand and you'll be chasing it around all over the place.

Tommy, when De Niro does it, how does he do it (fingers on top, thumb on bottom. Or held in the fingers with the rest of the hand cupped below)? And how close to his mouth does he hold it?

What nobody has mentioned is that it helps to have a little, miniature gyroscope inserted into the die before the spin begins. the gyros are expensive, but well worth the cost of the effect.

Speaking of spin... which way are you trying to spin it? Clockwise or anti-clockwise? Depending on whether or not you're north or south of the equator... this may play a factor if you can't get the gyroscopes.

Have fun!
Will you walk into my parlour? said the Spider to the Fly,
Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy;
The way into my parlour is up a winding stair,
And I've a many curious things to show when you are there.

Oh no, no, said the little Fly, to ask me is in vain,
For who goes up your winding stair
-can ne'er come down again.

You could also cut two diagonal corners off a cube, drill a hole through it, run a little rod through and attach the little corners back onto the ends of the rod. Then you hold the corners and the rest of the cube will pivot around the little rod. It's like an electric deck type situation, but for dice.

Maybe I'll make a few of those, tell people the thing is impossible and that it can only be done with a gimmick, and try to sell some. Maybe I'll even claim to have made the prop that De Niro used in the movie.

LOL. If I do, I'll give you one. But you'll be doing it yourself the real way long before I ever go through that trouble.

I can do this really good. Of course, I can also tell you the vintage of antique layouts on sight too, and have a crooked dice collection that would make a street hustler ^%$# his pants.

So I saw this and showed my wife just now. She could do it the very first time, and by the third time, she was able to make a funny sound and work the pitch into notes! I think I need a camera on my dice while I'm out.....I'm scared now. She can probably throw a twist better than me. I gotta be carful now. :-(

LOL! Yeah, I'm not surprised you can do it King. After all, isn't it just a flourishy way to do the pivot test for weight?

Your wife can make music with it? I can make it "buzz" when I really get it spinning. But music, that's impressive!!

Actualy you should never trust a pivot that isn't in a proper rack. I have a way to make weight look good in the fingers....weight won't ever run fast though.

She is making a sort of a kazoo sound with the notes,if that describes it better.

You can kill that wobble with your fingers? Make weight look like it's spinning fair? Cool.

Yeah that's kind of what I do, a kazoo or buzzing sound, but I can't change the pitch. lol. If she can make a song out of it, she might be able to take that to Americas Got Talent. That would be one unique act.
