Hi Everyone
I was wondering if anyone knows something about this effect: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DiDIXoIAkcg I'm not after the method, was just wondering if this is a marketed effect (probably not) or if someone could point me into the right direction (suggest a specific section of a book or something).. I just have a feeling that this is a "derrenized" version of an existing trick. Thanks guys Carl |

Tamariz does something similar, but not as clean I might add. Havent seen really anything excatly the same as that but I immediately figured out a way to do that from the works of David Regal. He has published something in his first dvd serie that could be used to create something extremely similar. Hope that helps.

I've never actually seen Derren Brown before. Very nice clip.
It occurrs to me that since Derren Brown has as far as I know written several books or eBooks and released at least one DVD, that may be a good place to start for learning how his ACAAN-ish effects are done. I'm feeling a light tickle in my Visa card myself right now.

Hi Noobini
I think I got about everything from Derren, unfortunately no info on that one. I am absolutely sure you will be happy with everything you can get from Derren, this guy is incredibly smart, has loads of carisma and does fantastic shows. You might want to check a couple of vids on youtube first, I'm sure you'll get the dvd's immediately (Very cool on youtube: "derren brown russian scam"). Cheers Carl |

Yeah, I was at his homepage last night after posting here looking for something good to buy. The Devil's Picturebook DVD looks very tempting. But at GBP 35 it is over the tax limit of imported goods here, so the price shoots up to $104 PLUS the international shipping. With all the great DVDs out there I haven't seen, I will not be getting this one anytime soon.
Anyway, in the descriptions for his lecture DVD there is something slightly similar... maybe: "SMOKE: An incredible routine, where a card that has been merely thought of by a spectator, is first named by Derren then disappears from an untouched deck only to impossibly appear...well, wait and see." I am speculating obviously, but it could be he uses the same technique in more than one effect to control a "merely thought of card" (which in the world of magic DVD descriptions seems to usually mean an "actually mentioned card" that the spectator is conditioned into thinking he has only thought of) I will check out the YouTube clip you mention after a quick 4 hour brunch.

In smoke spectator thoughts a card from ribbon spread deck and without any fishing or so magician names the card and immediately shows its to be missing from the deck and appear...
Well, I don't want to give too much away but the first time I saw Derren do this on some old Ron MacMillan competition tape I swore that it was stooged! There simply isn't any other way. The deck was spread and shown to have 52 cards. Shuffled and cut and spectator just thought of one card from long wide ribbon spread and without any questions he named the thought of card and made it disapper without really touching the deck and appear somewhere impossible. Its not a pipe dream but real trick and it is explained among many other gems in devils picture book. I wont go into detail about the method but it is deffinately something that could be even used in real world strolling magic and not just some pipe dream that could be used in competition or certain special settings. To my knowledge that is only thing he is using it and the subject of this topic doesn't use it. For newbies, Derren also teaches trick in devild picture book where spectator is given one card to put into his pocket without looking and then asked to name a card. The named card is in the spectators pocket. Not for amateurs but in experienced hands the effect is devastating... J-M PS Stop PM:ing me about the methods... I am bored to answer em. |

Carl, this particular trick is not published 'as-is' anywhere, to the best of my knowledge, including in DB's own released works. Smoke is in PE and DPB (updated version), and performance-only on some of the International videos.

Hi Guys
Many thanks for your replies. @Noobini I've seen the smoke one, awesome trick really As Korttihai mentioned though, it's not the same method. A word of advise on the devil's picturebook though.. Get it only if you already have some skills in Card Magic.. it's not an easy one I can tell you @korttihai_82 I couldn't believe it too first time I saw it, I too thought it might be stooged. On the other hand, I couldn't believe PK touches either when I first saw it.. There are some methods which are so *** clever that you can hardly believe there is any method sometimes Also, Derren is incredibly good at a) forcing cards and b) sleight of hands Just one thing.. "PS Stop PM:ing me about the methods... I am bored to answer em." Just to clarify for other members.. I never asked anyone for methods.. I guess that's korttihai's signature Just don't want to give a wrong impression of myself @ChristopherM Yep, it really doesn't look like this has been publishe anywhere.. but honestly.. I wouldn't publish it if I created it I just have a feeling I've seen a trick where a spectator holds the card under a table and somehow picks a card, and the magician knows which one it is. thanks to all again |

Sounds very exciting. We'll see. Maybe I want to splurge one day.
And I'd like to add that I haven't been PMing anyone about the method either.

Hello Carl,
If you like that kind of effect... If you get two decks, I think this is the closest(although a spec cannot name a card before the effect like in the DB clip): http://www.camirandmagic.com/rt_025.html |

Hi All
Just wanted to let you know.. I figured out a method to do it using something on the devil's picturebook I'm gona use it soon, that's a good effect to learn something about showmanship and on how to create the right ambiente before doing an effect. Let's see if this beats prohibition, my everyday routine ine bar's (I can't live without corona anymore) cheeers Carl |

After seeing that I racked my brain and came up with a very heavily gimmicked and angly version that requires absolute spectator control. But give me a television crew and editor and I'm sure I can make it look as clean

Interestingly, DB didn't need the tv crew and editor to make it clean!
Took me ages and lots of brain racking to work out a half way decent way of doing this one too... |

I recently posted a thread called "One of the greatest card effects I have ever seen" about this effect in the workers section before I noticed this one.
This effect has been itching my brain since I saw it first about a year ago. Keith Barry performed a similar version on his Extraordinary special in the U.S. I did want to add that I have watched this clip enough times to realize that the seeming crane shot that shows Jonathan and Jane removing the cards from under the table and spreading them HAD to have been shot after the bulk of the effect. Look carefully at the spread cards. Their order changes in some closeup shots. After giving it some thought, I think I can replicate this effect piece by piece, even having a spectator predict the card, however it is quite complicated and what you see neatly polished is NOT what actually happened in the order it happened. My proof is the phantom changing order. There were some camera tricks at play and I think I am beginning to know exactly where. I just can't believe the handling of the basic effect isn't written about somewhere. |

Great Gallina,
As you are new to the forum I might like to advise you that discussing DB methods is a risky business, particularly if you are claiming that he is using editing! See other posts. Besides if you are going to discuss methods, then do it in Secret Sessions when you have 50 posts. Just a friendly observation... By the way, I don't think he did use editing, there's no need so why bother? |
