Title:Crazy Ball by Bruno Copin
Medium: DVD
Arena: Formal close up
Available: Any shop, distributed by Murphys Magic Supplies

Formal close up? Yes, that is what I said and that is what I mean. Before I get into all that let’s look at what we have with this DVD. Bruno Copin is a performer out of France and is a very well respected and talented magician. He has released a number of products that are for the professional magician and they are priced as such. The price, roughly double what one expects to pay for a DVD, perhaps a bit more, is there to keep the hobbyist at bay. This will result in lower sales but also make the routine more exclusive as well. The production level is fine, the camera work is good enough and the DVD runs with a window open showing a side view of the action while the main view is dead on from the front. The sound is fine and while French Mr. Copin does not have any problems with English and while accented he is easily understood, in fact he is what I would call fluent in English.

The routine as presented is a masterpiece of magical timing. Bruno uses special music and he must hit each move perfectly in order for the music to be in sync with his actions. He does this very well. The person purchasing this DVD will likely want to make changes to fit their performance circumstance. A good example is Bruno uses a cigarette to great advantage to cause magic to happen, to add texture to the performance, and as utilities and a component of the routine. I am anti cigarette magic completely not only because in the US it is a taboo it seems these days but because I am an ex smoker who prefers to stay away from them as much as possible. I was able to take the routine and make changes to fit me so I think the worker will be able to do this as well. It should also be noted this is for a formal show not for strolling.

What is Crazy Ball? It is a very original, at least I’ve never seen anything like it, chop cup routine that utilizes IT. You get IT with the DVD and Bruno’s hook ups are interesting and very effective for this routine. I mention the IT not to tip anything but because the hook up and movements make the ball act in a very unusual manner and in a manner that doesn’t scream ‘I’m on a string!’. Some of the moves are extremely magical and mysterious while others are merely fascinating. I found it one of the better chop cup routines I’ve ever seen. If you do a formal set with a close up pad as your theater and want to add a chop cup routine that is unusual this may be of interest to you. This is a rather ambitious use of IT and it works well for Bruno and to be honest once he tips it to you it is not that difficult to work with. His IT is very nice and it pulls apart nicely to be used. I’ll be reviewing his thread and holder later on.

Sorry, you hallway hit men and street assassins will need look elsewhere for magic, this is for the big boys and it is beautiful. I think with the right music some of you could make this a center piece. Great magic and some creative magic as well. The price may scare you off but for those really interested in this kind of work consider it an investment.
