Hey guys. The last few weeks a tried to make a trick list, which could be my first act. now I have one. my opener is strange and the followong effect even more, so let me know what you guys think.
1. Challenge Mind Reading(BCS) Vari.(Details later on) (Kolossal Killer as out) 2. Paperclipped with the signed card from the first trick(signed card? read on) 3. sinful 4. Invisible Deck(a la Bill Malone) 5. Cosomos This thread is not about this "Setlist". It's abot the 2 Trick Combo Challenge Mind Reading and Paperclipped as an opener. Here is how I imagine it: Challenge Mind Reading: I use the test condition patter and tel the spec, that not even one person shopuld see their card, so the spec makes sure she is the only one who knows the card.during the trick the spec is very far away from me. even more far than in the original effect. Until the point where the spec cuts all cards before their card to the back, I do exaxt same as mr. osterlind. here it comes: I give the spec a reason to do this, because when the cards are held like this it is an easy matter to sign the card, so that nobody else can see the card. So this makes everythink really natural. when they are done I say. put the whole deck careflly, so you do not flash(the spec shouldnt flash their card) behind your back and out your card inside your back-pocket.(because if the card is just put in the middle of the deck and I get the deck later on it's not as impossible anymore. when spec is done, the deck is put inb the case(here the p**k is happeningm exept I got one before, than I through em the card box). I give the case to another spec. I say: would you be impressed if I went thru all the cards..........you know the rest. I think this verson has some advantages comparing to the original for me. 1. I have a signed card to follow with paperclipped. 2. the actions of the spec have a sense(to sign the card) 3. first the audience reacts on the specs reaction then thei have a visual proove, the signed card) advantages of the combo and using it as an opener: 1.after the mind reading, people do not expect sleight of hand - so when I am pattering: "what are the odds, that this card is also a 2 of diamonds..." the audience does not expect that the folded card will be their signed card, because until now I have done something really different, so that a prediction would make sense. I think there is more of a surprise then. 2. using the BCS in the opening effect makes me secure. I know there is no sleight of hand, all about the presentation. if something goes wrong(f e. I see the spec shuffles the deck - I say I have one card in my wallet - and I do kolossal killer as an out) and: I haven't done this yet, but I think I will do this. I haven't done cosmos yet, but got great reactions everytime with galaxy. I have got great reaction with all of this stuff exept paperclipped, which is very new to me and I haven't done yet very often. I have to practise my mercury card f*** yet. guys: what do you think. EDIT: o I forgot something: you remember osterlind in mind mysteries 3 talking about bill in cigarette, that you should pull the bill out of the cig, where the cig lied, and not bring it back and then pull it out. bill vanishes at here and appears a few metres away is more amazing. now I think the same with paperclipped: if the folded card is really far away from you(really on the nearest part on the table to the audience, and most far away spot from you) it's more impossible. |

It seems like paperclipped is sorely underused in the above situation. If they have just witnessed a strong show of mentalism, you're right that they won't expect sleight of hand, but what that really means is that they will not be in the right frame of mind to understand what's going on when you reveal the paperclipped card.
You would probably get a reaction, but more surprise than amazement. With all of the effort spent detailing the impossibility of the first effect, it just feels like an afterthought to add a "By the way, it's also over here!". Then again, you explicitly said you are looking for surprise there, so that may be exactly what you want to happen. In my opinion, paperclipped is stronger than that, and there are much better methods of surprising them. |
