One guy at work is my toughest critic. The students like almost anything I do and IMHO I know some good card tricks.
His top 6 ranked are as follows: 1. Just imagine 2. Paper clipped 3. Side swiped 4. Snow storm 5. End of story 6. Back in time Need I say more? Sankey has given us some true workers that boggle the mind of spectators. Best of all, great presentations also! |

I think the 3 Ring Circus is great. A lot of good ideas on all his DVD's.

Even though not one Sankey effect is in my working repertoire, I own or have seen nearly everything he has ever released. He was one of my earliest inspirations to pursue magic beyond the level of "merely curious." Some of his greatest effects that were in fact in my repertoire for while (just don't fit my performance style anymore) are:
The Phoenix Effect (Front Row Sankey) Full Lotus (Front Row Sankey) Fan Mail (Front Row Sankey) Hypothesis Production (Anytime Anywhere) Slow Motion Coins #2 (Anytime Anywhere) Against All Odds (Anytime Anywhere) Outsider (Secret Files) X (Secret Files) Healer (Secret Files) No Jacket Required (Greatest Hits) Belly of the Beast (Greatest Hits) Joking Around (Greatest Hits) V.I.P. (Greatest Hits) Ups and Downs (Greatest Hits and Rev Coin Magic) Mr. Clean Coins Across (Rev Coin Magic) Push-Button (Rev Coin Magic) Bigger Finish (single effect) Single Ambition (single effect) As you can see, I am a big fan of Sankey. It's actually surprising when I look back on how many of his effects I used to perform regularly. Overall I believe the best products for value are Front Row Sankey, Rev Coin Magic, and Greatest Hits. Of course Sankeytized I and II have a ton of classics as well. I also highly recommend Beyond Secrets for anyone who wishes to think about magic from a simple philosophical angle for the first time. It does not explore anything in any great depth, however it will give you a starting point for examining your own magic in depth. And of course I rewatch my Sankey vids all the time purely for entertainment value. I am one of those who just thinks he's absolutely hilarious. GO SANKEY! |

I agree with Brian above, Beyond Secrets is a good read and shows a more thoughtful side of Sankey than comes across in his DVDs. Not quite Absolute Magic, but not bad. I own a number of the DVDs and would agree that the earliest ones I have which are the "The very best of" series contain more of the material I would perform, such as Leaving Home and the quite brilliant Paperclipped.

Most often I perform Paperclipped, Astral Projection, Just Imagine, Holy Moly ( and now Holy Stretch ). Quite a few others.
He's a very gifted fellow. He's also quite gernerous. Look at the free effects on his website: http://www.sankeymagic.com/learnfreetricks.aspx They are from some video projects and some are killer. 1000 words and fast hands are first rate. His Youtube comedy shorts are hysterical. Look at his take off on Criss Angel ( and it's acurate ) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X111P00h6TU

Also, Topper Tack was originated by Frank Garcia. On another note, one of my favorite Sankey effects is Squiggle from "Sankey Pankey". Back In Time is also one of my favorite openers. One thing that irks me about Jay's DVDs is that the clips of him being goofy are usually given a title on the back of the DVD. So, when I watch the DVD I'm expecting 5 more effects than what I actually get. I haven't bought any Sankey material since Revolutionary Card Magic came out, so I don't know if this is still the case. I remain a fan nonetheless. -T.J. |

I am a pretty big fan. I enjoy watching his videos, and seeing how much fun he has with what he does. My favorite effect is paperclip, but I have many more that I am trying to learn that I will probably put in my repertoire.

I am a big fan as well. I had stopped doing magic but then went to a lecture he gave when I lived in Ft Collins, CO around 1995 and that got me back into magic.
I agree that he is rehashing a lot of his old work, but I don't have a problem with that. From a pure merchandising perspective, if he wants to reach new magicians, or magicians who don't know him, he needs to be releasing "new" material. So for those of us who know him, we don't have to buy his latest DVD if it is just a slight variation of something old. I do think he is very creative and his material has an entertaining component that I like. As for me, the best Sankey material is on: - Sanketized - Greatest Hits - 22 Blows to the head - Front Row Sankey While there is some overlapping material in that list, it is probably at most 10% on any DVD which makes the DVDs pretty good deals. |

Jay Sankey puts out a lot of stuff. Some of the material may be repeated from one dvd to the next. So What!
There will always be a backlash to prolific artists. Think about Stephen King, he can pump out books like there is no tomorrow. Does that mean that Carrie, Christine, The Shining, Hearts in Atlantis, Shawshank Redemption, Green Mile etc. suck? Some guys talk about avoiding such 'modern' trickery. Well, don't think for a second that Robert Houdin, Hofzinser, Professor Hoffman, David Devant etc would turn up there nose at Paperclipped, In a flash, Airtight etc. Those great magicians of yesterday use their style to turn them into masterpieces. That does not mean that all of his material is great. But most of it is, and he give so many effects for your money that if you get one repeated item you still ahve 20 more new ones on your dvd. If you buy a product then you get a free dvd with it with 40 minutes of material. I have always gotten my money's worth. He is a working magician, and full time producer of magic stuff. He earns his living by creating, performing, and lecturing. I might add that he has helped a lot of other people earn there living too. I am thankful of his contributions to the magic community and am glad that the money I spend on his products goes directly to him and his work. |

Here's one of the reasons I really like Jay's magic. Take his trick releases. They come with a comprehensive DVD with bonus handlings and tips. And Jay drives home the best ways to perform the effect He knows the reactions they should get and wants everyone that buys his effect to get the same great reactions.
Jay also takes allot of pride in what he creates and releases. When you watch the DVD, his excitement for the project comes through the screen. And his online demos are so honest and crystal clear. You know exactly what you're getting, so there's no mystery when you open the package.

I've been playing with some really old Sankey stuff... Chain Reaction, Billusion, Fine Print, Compact Compass. I LOVE Compact Compass and Billusion. A lot of people dislike Billusion but I found a much more powerful use for it... making it melt through the lower portion of my shirt or even melting through the spectator's shirt. It's an extremely powerful effect

Wow! Billusion... I thought I was the only one who liked it. It's a great effect and kids love it too. It's all in the presentation and if you get excited, so do they.
Haven't heard of Fine Print or compact compass. Time to search! |

Compact Compass, although it may appear cheesy and novelty-ish, actually gets very nice reactions. It's so fun to perform and very entertaining to the spectator.
