I wanted to read the original post, but I was diagnosed with ADD. Actually, that's not true. I was diagnosed with SUBTRACT.
Very interesting discussion but I agree with Mr Clark and Karbonkid and others that have said that a magician is not a psychologist. I think very few magicians really have an understanding of why certain tricks fool people. If they did, there would be far less variations of existing effects and fewer books and DVDs out since many of these variations wouldn't fool anyone (other than themselves). I am not even so sure that someone with a complete understanding of psychology would be any better at magic. |

Maybe we can all agree on the following statement, and I think I'll put this one to rest:
An individual possessing a sound understanding of fundamental human psychology is better equipped to create, structure and perform magic that truly fools people than are others having less an understanding. Brett
We magicians are of a unique lot. We aspire to deceive. We are liars. We are cheats. We are con artists. We can not be trusted. But we mean well.

Human behaviour: Is the raw data of psychology
The data tells me that we never all agree here at the café. Maybe we can all agree on that.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

All other things being equal, someone having working knowledge of a field is more likely to get a better result than someone working from scratch.
We usually hear that as "fortune favors the prepared".

Brett,
Great post. However, some of the subsequent post sounds like intellect envy. <grin>

Jonathan,
Honestly I meant that tongue and cheek. However, every post after Brett's original post is subsequent. Don't you think?

How are you doing on finding ways not to alert the audience subconscious to the trickery you use in magic? BTW. I ask their subconscious to help me show them some fun illusions. A college student suggested that, and it has helped a lot.

JT,
Actually after reading this thread, I went and pulled out some of my old hypnosis books that have sections on the subconscious, and it was pretty interesting stuff on how you can really bend that into your effects when performing. |
