Is there a magic club near you, especially a Young Magician's Society, great place to get mentors. Lots of experienced adult magicians out there who enjoy teaching and mentoring. Generally they are best found around local magic clubs. I didn't have money for tricks either. So I specialized in coins and cards in my teen years, I could get those. Working through Bobo's modern coin magic (the paperback isn't expensive) can take years. Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic is full of tricks you can make out of common things. I made a levitation illusion out of cardboard boxes, a couple of sheets, a coat hanger and a few angle brackets. Didn't have $20 in it, if I had bought everything. I made a variation on squared circle out of a box that I got a zombie from Abbots in. Cost $0 and I played both of those effects in my pro years, and they played well. You don't have to have a lot of money for magic, just willingness to learn, practice, and realize you can build a lot of props out of simple things. Even Lance Burton uses a prop made out of cardboard and duct tape.

Great point by Photius. It is about you - and what you can do out ouf our position. A mentor is not a precondition for success . . .

A mentor helps a lot though, you can normally find one in a magic shop or some magic club etc.

In a way we are all at the begining. The longer I am in it and the deeper I go into the art the more I can see ahead. On the $ end.. If you can weild a hand saw, can locate a sheet of 1/4" plywood and know how to operate a can of stray paint you have a ton of props just knocking at your door. Check out Dunniger's Enclyclopedia of Magic. It contains a wealth of knowledge even if appears to be line drawings and antique effects. For a mentor if you don't have local sources you can find many at the local Library, Houdini,Houdin,Dunninger,Thurston are all willing to mentor on their styles and many performers own them a lot.

I've seen my local magic club and they aren't to good from what I see....it just looks like a whole bunch of beginners that skipped to the advance stuff before they mastered the basics. |

Sounds like they need a mentor more than you. Perhaps you can offer to them what you have been without?
I have had no mentor, I am sure it would have been easier with one. However, I think I have done fairly well for myself. There are a lot of books out there with lots of good information, DVDs as well. Find a good online magic shop, read opinions here and get some resources that fit you. No shame in being a self made man.
Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.

The Magic Café is a great place for you to grow in the performing art of magic. Pursue magic as a performing art and not like a hobby where you learn a few tricks. There are many great guys and gals here that can be of great help to you.

Let me chime in . . . the book is as actual as it can be. As you might have discovered by now, there are not an awful lot of principle secrets in the magic world. It is more how to combine them to create a new and fresh trick.

Well if you have mastered all those things in those books you are probably among the 10 best magicians in the world. But I never met a master who actually admitted having mastered anything, but constantly sought to improve. If you mastered those books, then you really have a considerable grasp on how magic is created as well and should be able to improvise your own illusions and tricks from that information. I don't know too many performing pros who have mastered all of that material. Sounds like the mentoring you need isn't in magic, but perhaps in the business of magic and performing. Performing seek out a drama coach or teacher, at least it is a start. The business of magic, well start reading and digesting everything in the Tricky Business forum. Start performing, getting performing experience. Put together a show. Start marketing yourself. You apparently believe you already have command of the basics, the advanced is nothing more than application of the basics. Get applying.
Start mowing lawns, sacking groceries, delivering papers or what ever type of job you can get and save your money, invest in a session with the magic and mystery school of Jeff McBride. Go to conventions and compete in the youth division, that will get you noticed by the working pros, plus you can meet a lot of them at conventions and may possibly find a mentor there.

You're doomed, dude. With that attitude, why seek further training? All the advanced stuff is typically adding on to the basic. In other words, you'll easily master it. I know that for myself, regarding my job, I've always said that the day that I can't learn anything new is the day I quit. I feel I'm good at what I do and I don't think I'm still beyond the basics. Magic, as a hobby, art form or vocation, should be the same. If the basic stuff is too easy, maybe you aren't challenging yourself enough. Just tonight, I was reading "Modern Coin Manipulations" by T. Nelson Downs. He mentions something to the extent of holding 20 coins in each hand without the bystander noticing. The picture, shown within the context of the statement, shows him holding a stack of coins in edge palm. An easy palm, of course. I'm sure you can easily withhold 20 half dollars without anyone noticing, having mastered all the basics. |

Ok I see I'm taking allot of heat for saying that I mastered "all" the basics......What I mean when I say "master" is that I can do it with my eyes closed over and over again without trouble and it looks natural, that's all...I have been doing magic for 7 years so I must be somewhat good......I'm not trying to look like I'm some great magician(other wise I wouldn't be on here).....
and when I said "outdated" I meant more the illusions.....I don't go for magic that is mediocre I go for the stuff that puts people in awe......and for the people that say I should start making my own tricks, I already am.......I try to incorporate nature into my magic and not many people use nature in there magic besides animals ...that's whats gonna make me different from everyone else(eventually I'm only gonna use nature)....right now I'm working on a trick that I make grass grow in a strangers lawn....again I'm not telling you all this to look like a good magician but just so you can see where I'm at.....like I said I'm here to learn.... |

The first step to find a mentor is meeting magicians in some association or ,magic club.
