My brother in law sells solar systems, the most expensive I've heard of on homes run well over $100,000.00 (you be off the grid but not off the banks grid!). I'd like to see if I can get at least something solar when I build the new house out here. My problem is, and I don't know because I now nothing, is how effective it will be in the Winter when we have snow and clouds.

Magic Santa, I believe many modern panels, especially monocrystalline only need daylight, not direct sunlight to produce sufficient power.
However your suggestion of wind and solar seems a magic mix, if you are well situated for it. I think the process need not be cripplingly expensive too. If you do it yourself and are willing to source reclaimed materials, second hand panels etc. |

The key to successful solar power is not to get a big enough array to run your current needs (pun intended), it is being able to lower your needs for power to the point where a small array and battery pack can supply all you need.
If you can pull it off in a biker bar without being violated by a corn dog, more power to you.

Wise words sir, no bad thing to be concious of the power we are using too. As it stands I could probably run 3 factories from my house. It certainly doesn't have to be nuclear powered for our puny needs. LED's have got very good and use a miniscule amount of power compared to regular light bulbs or fluorescent's. Solar water heating is a very cheap stand alone system too.

Mobile/cell phones do not work there, so we do have a telephone line connection. Just tap into our home/office and mobile phones from there to pick up calls and patch the laptop into the line. Always fun talking to clients and sending pdf info kits when you're covered in mud and assorted rural debris and they have no idea where you are. I'm also in the middle of converting our real home to have dual systems not only to save money but we do get occasional blackouts during bushfire/wild fire season, so we can switch to the solar to run lights, pumps, and compressor fridge. Funny I found this thread today, as I intend to install another PV panel on the roof tommorow. cheers Timothy Hyde |
