Any ideas as to best walk-around effects for WW II veterans. They would be 80 to 90 years old, likely hard of hearing, sitting at tables with friends and family.

Hippity Hop Hitler?
Just keep it simple. Effects shouldn't be long and drawn out or rely on memory or math. Their main goal is to just be there ..... or anywhere for that matter.

What ever you do should be fine. You may want to consider cards with jumbo indexes for easier reading. It is nice when people do magic for seniors. We just lost a gentleman who arranged for the guards to be present for vet funerals, he was a Pearl Harbor survivor (US side) and if some vet died and no one knew him he'd make sure people were present. He was 94. One thing, many of the people at that age are very alert and funcioning fine so, and I know this is not needing to be stated, treat them with respect rather than geezers. Go get 'em. and good for you.

Engage your audience.
these folks, from my experience.. LOVES TO TELL YOU their stories. THey are awesome yo... minus the few that still harbors negative views toward the Japanese (dude I"m asian). But yeah, keep the tricks simple too. My guess is your gig will consist of 80% of the time spent listening to their stories and 20% of real magic.

Don't get me wrong war is awful, but the way the American and the English handled themselves was pretty funny. British intelligence found out the Germans made a fake town for the English to bomb lights and shell buildings. They turned the light out on the real town. The English dropped wooden bombs on the fake town then bombed the real one. Political correctness should never be part of a war, once you decide your going to annihilate an enemy you should use every resource to rally your side so that you prevail. This includes the media and humor. There is quite a collection of WWII magic tricks depicting us winning the war. Most were politically incorrect images of Hitler and Tojo. The side that can laugh at the enemy and its self wins.

Hi Ken:
You may already know this - skip the card tricks. They won't even remember what color card they selected, let alone the number. Jim |

Statements like that are as insensitive as "Hey! Here comes the magician! Get a good grip on your wallet!" or "Can you make my wife disappear?" Just do your regular show. If you are any good, they will enjoy it. BTW, Jumbo indices are of doubtful use. If you need to force a card, use a low spot card.
