Hey Everyone...,
I seldom ever do this..., but I thought that I would share with you a new product I just bought. Cliff Wiggs of PROLine Magic just sent me a set of his new PRORings and they are the best I have ever used. They are 15" and are 1/2" thick. If you're serious about doing a good solid ring routine, then these are the rings for you. I play a lot of big rooms, and these bad boys will show up really nice if you're playing a house the size of a living room or The Kennedy Center. They have an almost deafening tone to them...they really ring like a bell. Anyone who is serious about their ring work should pick these up. Cliff did a great job on them...they're a work of art! In my opinion...they are better than the Owens rings...and you know how nice the Owens Rings are. Wow!!! Simply amazing.... One of the problems with these rings when they came out is that they turned some peoples hands black. Something about aluminum and oxidation I think. At the time they suggested spraying them with Armour All. Not something I wanted to do.
Have they fixed this situation? |

YES they have! Here's the long twisted story in a nutshell!
I had been using 12" stainless for 18 years. I wanted somthing larger that would play bigger. I found Doug Tilfords website who was offering a set of 13" rings from PROLine Magic at only $250.00. I made my order and got my set. I was not at all impressed. They were not good AT ALL!!!!! After having them for only 3 weeks, they were dented, scratched up, and yes...my hands always turned black when I used them. I did use armorall on the rings...it didn't help...it just made them very slippery and hard to handle. I contact Cliff who owns PROLine and told him of my issues. With my help, he has "COMPLETELY REDESIGNED" the Rings. First of all, the old set of rings was 13" and were 3/8" thick. The NEW RINGS are 15" and are 1/2" thick. So they are bigger and thicker. Cliff threw out the old alluminium he used and is using a different grade. The new grade is LIGHTER and SOUNDS better than the original rings he made...plus it's a totally different finish. They appear to look like mirrors. The best part of all this...NO BLACK RESIDUE on your hands. I know that I'm sounding like a commerical right now...but these rings are really good. Owens sell their 15" x 3/8" rings at $750. PROLine sells their 15" x 1/2" rings at a fraction of that ($450.00). I got the very first set of these rings and I'm never lettin' go of them. They are mighty awesome! In Mystery, Christopher Christopher Lyle World Class Magical Entertainment Worldwide http://www.lylemagic.com

Are they still made from aluminum?
Things are more like they are today than they've ever been before...

Yes...but it's a much stronger/nicer grade. They are lighter than the old feather weight rings that were out about a decade or so ago.

Porper has just come out with an incredible new locking key that unlocks with a crash link (a sideways crash that I developed working on the instructions for these). Not advertised yet, he'll have some at Magic Live.

I tried ordering the proline two weeks ago. Both proline and tilford gave me no help - Tilford did not even know the product both times I called, even though I was reading their website. I then called Owens, they had a long friendly talk with me and sent my rings right away. Proline/Tilford lost a sale and Owens has a new loyal customer.

I never had any problem with Doug or Cliff when ordering my set. Not sure what happened. Nothing wrong with the Owens Rings. They're nice. I just prefer the others and for the price difference...no comparrison!

Pete, is Porper still producing these locking keys? Do they come with matching rings?

Yes, Joe is making two types of lockers and sells 'em in sets of 3. He also has the spinning ring set. He will make up any combination.
Jeff Hobson just got a full 8 set with the spinning/locker.

But only locking rings, and ghost rings look like different locking systems. Ghost ring is NOT a locking ring. It is a very different key, Are those the two types? Or is it "spinning lockers vs. non-spinning lockers"? The spinning ring comes with the locking key, but has the spin gaff added. Or something else all together. The split ring is a ring that becomes two. I would suggest just the standard locking key and two singles.

Are we starting to produce more ring products to try to fool other magicians? Seems like the standard type of rings (done properly)has fooled audiences for ages. Just a thought.

I suspect that folks that don't do much with the rings can't believe that folks are fooled, and fooled badly by the standard set of rings.
Having said that I have had two audience members who almost figured it out. One asked, what's under your hand? I did the Vernon move to show that the ring was whole but she really wanted me to open my hand that covered the ***. Wish that I had a locking *** at that point so that I could just open my hand. That's the only time that someone has made the request. Others who were watching me didn't ask, so I think I did a pretty good job with the routine.

I'd just like to see a durable budget priced set that is welded and ground down properly. The rings that I've been seeing, lately, could be broken by a kid just examining them. The welds, if they aren't merely superglued, are weak and easy to spot by feel - pathetic! I've heard that the Klamm sets aren't what they used to be - I have two old sets, and they're great rings.
Many sets are made from stock that is too thick for the diameter of the ring. This makes it difficult to do certain moves, effectively. |
