Orville Meyer told me to always keep my mentalism and magic acts separate, but this is carrying it to extremes. Smile

I thought that anybody looking up information on Derren would be unhappy at finding they had been directed to a totally different site, and suggested this to the person involved.

They wrote back: What's being a nice buy got to do with it?
Anyone can own a domain name. He has .co.uk, and I have .com. There's nothing wrong with that. Someone could buy DrewMcAdam.com if they wanted too.
It's all about publicity. I have several sites that point to that one.
There's nothing wrong with pre-empting what someone will type in totheir browser and buying the domain name.
Whether people like it or hate it, well you can't please everyone.
I admire & respect Derren and have met him in person several times.
If he has a problem with me having that domain name, then all he has to
do is contact me.
Thanks for bringing it up anyway, it makes for an interesting
discussion."

It must be terrible, being so hungry for publicity that you have to pretend you're somebody else, don't you think?

HI Drew,
By his reply I think that what he is really interested in is selling the domain name to Derren at a big profit. He obviously thinks that Derren is a far bigger Name than he is at present and that he is a celebrity to non magicians or he thinks that Derren might become so in the future. Who knows he could be right.

If derren did become famous and whant to buy This name He could go through the courts. there have been cases recently where companys have forced individuals to sell a certain domain name. when it is clear they only bought it for profit. However, he would still get a large sum of money for it.
such is life.

Hi Phillip
I have just read several posts of yours where you say that Derren Brown isn't famous. You seem very keen to make this point. I am not sure why.

Well, from my experience he *is* well known to the public. People who know I have an interest in magic talk to me about him and mention him by name.

Oh, and domain squatting is vile.

HI,
James, your probably right. it's just that these magic forums give a false scence of peoples Fame and it seems as if things need to be put into perspective. I have nothing at all against Derren. But I am sure are american friends think by the posts on the forum that Derren is some sort of household name over here in the UK.
I agree he is popular with magicians and as you say The people you know that HAVE AN INTEREST IN MAGIC. However at present he is not famous or a celebrity (he may in time become one. If you ask the normal man/woman in the street to name a magicain they will likely say
Tommy cooper, Paul daniels or David nixon a few will say David blaine or "the guy who made the statue of liberty dissapear.
I would wager that more people have heared of Jerry Sadowitz than Derren at present. I enjoyed what I have seen of Derren. However the very next day after the first show on a minority Tv Channel several forums were flooded with posts about Derren and how he was famous . I know that we all love magic and it would be great if Derren did Become a Houshold name. But lets keep a balanced perspective.

I'm now going to use my psychic powers to predict that Derren Brown will become the most famous magician in the world.
Now Derren, if you,re reading this were can I get a copy of "reminiscence"?

I hope that Derren will not become a famous magician, but a famous mentalist.

I think you'll find the url for .com now points to Derrens site.

Did Derren send the boys round I wonder ?? ... or did the guy who was using the domain realise his error!

Hi,
Here in the Uk most non magicians/magicians friends would have no clue what a Mentalist was.

I'm confused.
Is Mentalism a branch of magic or not?
If not why are we discussing Derren Brown on the Magic Cafe?

Of course mentalism IS a specialised branch of magic, but I do agree with the comment that in the UK, it's not a commonly understood term amongst the lay people. Personally, I introduce mysely as a mentalist (never a magician) so that I can explain the kind of stuff to expect.
There are two types of people in the world. Those that divide the world into two types of people, and those that don't.

After Steve Coogans use of the phrase in I'm Alan Partridge ,it would be a brave man who introduced himself as a mentalist in front of a young UK audience!
