Do photon's really need a couple of scientists teaching them how to travel the speed of light?

Do they mean photons or the information encoded in the photons (spin etc)?
It's not useful to oversimplify findings then make obtuse claims... outside of storytelling where it inspires wonderful tales as per the above. Now we can take out two prisms and watch cards and coins travel backwards in time.

Kregg...they DO need some help traveling FASTER than the speed of light...a hundred years from now I hope you remember this post...I'll be gone but you can reflect on your trip to Altair 4

Just read another article... a quantum tunneling effect they say. iffy at best I say when they claim it works over FEET instead of nanometers.

Uh Oh! you guys need a physicist here, luckily I just happen to have one.
No. The author of the article was either speaking out of turn, or the physicists, in an attempt to use layman's language got mis-stated. The other possibility is that someone lied. Teleportation does exist. I have seen the apparatus with my own eyes. It transports a photon in less time then we can measure (ie. instantaneously) from one place to another. The distance which I did not measure seemed to be about 2 feet, maybe a bit less. The problems comes in definition of terms. Transportation in this way does not travel! there is not speed at all because speed is defined as the distance traveled over the time it takes to get there. if you are teleported you did not travel, you were just here than there. No speed, no violation of the speed of light. If you want to do the math and divide say 1 meter by .0004 seconds (numbers are made up by me at random) you can do that, but that time was made up. The real time is zero, and to get a speed you would have to either divide by zero, and get no answer, or make up a very small number, which may have been what they did, and get a huge speed. This might explain a faster than light answer. I am not buying it. I will not say we will never see faster than light traveling. I am saying we won't see it for many years, and that is if we discover a whole new technology that no one can imagine yet. Cyclotrons get within 1 meter/second of the speed of light. Super coolers get within 1 degree of absolute zero. But some things are just not meant for humans.

I'm pretty sure this is _not_ the first "tunneling to beat c" experiment that's been done.
I'm pretty sure also that it's been shown that sort of thing does _not_ violate causality. That is, it does not allow information to actually get from A to B faster than c. the tunneling, I think, just reshapes the photon or something. (am I way off on this?) |

Wel...at least they are working on it before certain uncivilised primitives take us back to the 15th century.

In our physical world we cannot travel the speed of light within a vehicle, we must become light. The first scientist who can separate a mixed cake batter, returning all of the ingredients to their original state, will be on to a real discovery.
