Hey Christopher, we know you are actually on the side of good and not evil this just all spun by the card and statement. You are alright in my book.... and when I'm tossed off that bridge I'll miss you and everyone else....

1. Lyle was hired to be there first.
2. Danny, you made up the "save you a few bucks" line 3. Santa, I stopped believing in you when I was 9. 4. Kamm, why do I need proof of who I am and what I do, and santa does not. You can't automatically side with those who think the same way as you. History proves that to be detrimental if not life threatening. 5. Handing out a business card IS NOT CLIENT POACHING. PERIOD. 6. No one has addressed the UNWRITTEN, UNSPOKEN, and UNKNOWN set of rules that you some of you claim to live by. 7. Business ethics are very clearly written out in thousands of sources. This is not a go by how you feel kind of thing. business ethics is not synonymous with your own set of ethics. That is a very ignorant way of looking at things. I have never stolen anyones client, nor do I condone it. Please stop twisting my words and thoughts to fit your arguments. If I was magician B and magician A, who had every right to be there first (lyle) gave out his card, I would not see it as a threat. In fact I would hope to meet up with him and talk magic over a beer after hours. I would love to discuss this issue with any of you in a more synchronous discussion. pm me with your phone number or I will give you mine. |

I put the "save her a few bucks" synopsis. The actual line is next time they would not have to hire anyone. Seems pretty clear to me what the intent was. It is. Now minus THIS line, yep I can understand the card thing as a reflex. I really can. BUT to tell me that this line is not wrong, is just plain poaching and that is not right. Sorry. You just lost your whole point. I don't care who vouches for you. What would you call it? He offered to "save her a few bucks next time", HIS words not mine. So what was it he was doing? Good question Danny. I'm glad you asked me that. That is where so much of the understanding lies at in this thread. Lylemagic mentions the private party guest were feeling bad as he was about to leave their table. So he was trying to help them feel comfortable before he left their table without performing for them. Read the fine print carefully: Quote: On 2007-08-19 10:56, lylemagic wrote: I was pro about it and said "no problem," that I'll make myself disappear as we were pretty busy and I had other tables to play. They felt bad but I told them not to worry about it...that it was no big deal...I gave them my card and told them to keep me in mind for other events and let them know when I was performing at the restaurant. Case closed... Lylemagic never mentions any fees to the guest. If he would of stayed to perform, I would of pictured he was wrong, but he did not. If he would of approached the private party guest knowing there was a magician coming he would of been wrong. He did not know about a different magician until the they told him. I wasn't talking to you actually but thanks for that.

Posted: Aug 22, 2007 1:48am And you know, now that I think of it... if the lady had known there was a magician at the restaurant...she probably wouldn't have hired that other shmuck...and lyle would have made his same pay at the restaurant that night. lyle was working already that night = no client poaching. I cant wait for you to talk your way out of this one. |

Right so now your not saying I made up the line right?
What am I ignoring? What am I seeing different. HE OFFERED TO DO THE NEXT PARTY SO THEY WOULD NOT HAVE TO HIRE ANOTHER PERFORMER. That is poaching, oh which you say you don't do or condone. If it is not what we are refering to as poaching please enlighten us as to what it is called so we can be educated. Then tell us what poaching is so we can compare the behavior. What am I making up now? So I ask, is THAT line ok? I think without THAT line, the card thing can go either way. It is a matter of objective opinion at that point. I think that without THAT particular line that it is harmless. At the point which he delivers the line to cut another worker out of a gig it becomes poaching. Really simple. So go tell me how in business it works. Instead of telling us of the 1000s of sources, give us one so we can look please? Show us how THIS particular situation is addressed.

Le'me check the score:
The Mikes: poaching is healthy and good and please don't call it poaching, call it good clean competition. The rest: It is a small community and one shouldn't stick it to another in their own nest. Now I do want to point out that one of the disagreement with the rest did make a threat to me which is no biggie but doesn't express a willingness to listen. Just remember you Conneticut magi, its all fair in your...um...safe haven for insurance corporations and phone psychics. |

Of course the restaurant would be proud of what he did because that is part of his job, getting the guest to come back. Some magicians would of said the wrong thing like "Hire me for a private party at your house next time when I am not at this restaurant. I bet I can beat the other magician's fee." Lylemagic, I got to really give it to you. |

But I will be ***ed if you accuse him or me of poaching anything anymore. And the other guy obviously has a lot to learn about himself. If the lady HAD known there was already a magician there, lyle would have made no extra salary, the lady WOULD have saved a few bucks, and no one would have been the wiser. The best analogy to make in this case is about competition speaking from a biological standpoint. Competition between species is the catalyst for evolution. That is what we need here. Just because you are a magician, does not earn you your spot in the show. you need to earn it, and if you aren't in shape, you need to evolve. Competition means you have to stay on your toes and make sure you are providing your customers what they want and need. Competition is good for YOU! unless you just want to sit back and think that one one else would ever try to take your place. That is when people start to slack and take advantage of the rules. It is your belief of monopoly and control of the market that leads to magicians being hacks... not the other way around. |
