I have been trying to close the thumb fan with one hand but to no avail. I've seen the videos where fans are closed simply with one hand and no obvious motion. Do any of you know how to do it?

Only your fingers close in, your thumb doesn't move. Try it out. It's a matter of feel, just practice.

The one-hand fan close is described in detail in Card College, The Card Magic of Paul LePaul, and on the Jeff McBride videos.
Any of the above is a worthy purchase. Paul

It is also taught in ninja from Ellusionist. I just figured it out myself, it's not that hard.

If, when you go to do it, you flick your (asumming L hand) left wrist right-ward to your body, you can use momentum to help close it up. Looks extra cool because it's just like "Zzzzip!" and it's closed, a reverse switchblade effect. I'm striving to do this in exact reverse, and whip out my deck and "Flick!" it comes out as fanned, as if it was a card switchblade.

All it takes is spidering with your fingers.
and if you jerk your hand a little like diavo said , it helps (doesn't look that good though) -Matt

@diavo:
You're going to want to learn your one handed circular fan for that. However, the best way to close it is to keep your hand still. Generally stuff looks more impressive as the ratio of hand movements to card motion decreases. |

Not closed as in a Moderate said "These Card Punks are acting up again" and Locked the thread...
Just a dead thread meaning people type up a response and then smack there forehead becuase the person asking the question has long since had his answer. |

The explanation in Showoff w/ Cards is Crap for this Move…
I’m not dissing the whole DVD as a Whole… If you picked it up for a couple bucks and can pick out the good from the bad, then it is worth the money. **this is aside from the politics of the guy stealing everyone’s moves and not crediting anyone** You Get a Better Explanation in Jerry C’s Encyclopedia of Flourishes. Once Again, I’m replying to a three year old Thread… Thank you People!! |

Practice. Easier and cheaper than learning from a DVD.
