I just had the chance to see the new Dan Harlan DVD series. Can anyone explain to me, why there are no credits at all? Ok, one or two, but that's it. Maybe I missed it?
I wonder, I see the same thing in the new Jim Pace DVDs. What's the problems? Also on couple of other new products. Thanks for helping me understand this issue. And just at the same time, I found the series very dissapointing. Keep in mind, it's from a real professional. I was expecting more and the editing is very poor also. And some of the routines...no comment! This is not the point here, though. Tell me about the credits. Kuffs |

I'm just speculating here, but sometimes people just don't know and don't care to find out who to give credit to. Or maybe they do want to give credit, except that they can't find a reliable source to give credit to. Sometimes, some things are standard/old, and I guess some magicians feel that it is "public domain."
I really don't know if those are true, but those are some ideas that come to mind. So it's most likely laziness, although there could be some cases where the creator cannot be clearly identified. Why not address the producers of the videos? I think Magicsmith did the Jim Pace Video, and Chris Smith has always responded to my product inquiries. If you're adamant about making a statement about "lack of crediting", you could boycott and/or start a petition against various magicians and magic producers. Jamy Ian Swiss talked about that in his book, "Shattering Illusions." |

I have many magic books and there are many well known books with "stolen" effects/material. Seldom will you find correct credits for the originator of the idea. Why not have a forum here with a list with stolen ideas/concepts?

Hey guys, it was not my intention to start a fight with all the world of magic, and I am sure you two either..but, I just wonder why !!!
Please, see my questions more like a way to talk about it and make some people wake up. That's it. No more fight..lol... Thanks guys for sharing your thoughts. I appreciate it. Kuffs |

I wasn't intending to start a fight with the world of magic, I just made the same suggestion that Jamy Ian Swiss did in his book, to boycott magicians and magic producers who steal and do not give credit.
That is different then starting a fight with the world of magic. It's just starting a ruckus with the few people in the magic business who like to take credit for other people's ideas and creations. And just to let you know, sometimes the truth can be ugly. And to expose some of the magicians who don't credit, it can cause some tempers to flair and feelings to be hurt. So if you want to wake people up Mr. Kuffs, you need to show the problem and possible solutions as well as consequences for the guilty parties. And your post is probably better suited to the "Food for Thought" section of the magic Café instead of the "Good, the bad, and the garbage" section. If you check out the "Food for Thought", there are more issues about ethics and theory. |

Thanks K.C. I agree with you, and I posted it here because at the same time I give some of my humble opinions on one of the products.

I find it curious that Dan and Jim do not give credits. Since they are both inventors/creators of their very own effects.
I wont try to defend them as that isn't my place to do it. They are both well known and respected magicians and magic creators who can defend themselves. But I can expect that the effects on the dvd or video may be such that the source that would consider that they and their creators are commonly/generally known? BroDavid
