Hmmm........Anyone know who did? |

I saw a similar type of table at Magic Live! being sold at the Daytona Magic Booth. It did NOT fold down into an actual "briefcase", but it was equally compact and very nicely made.

Each leg breaks down into two pieces, joined using another copper plumbing fitting. All eight pieces fit quite easily inside the flight case which becomes the table top.

I don't know how much use this might be, but I've just been scanning some of MAK's new products and on the page below there is a folding table (last item on page) that may be able to be adapted to fit a briefcase.

An alternative for a music stand might be a folding microphone stand or maybe a a snare drum stand. The snare drum stand will certainly be much sturdier than a music stand.
I was talking to a fellow at the local S.A.M. assembly meeting about folding tables and he said that often when he walks on stage and unfolds his table he gets a round of applause. It's not a briefcase, but folks into a rectangular "package" a few inches thick.

How about a Harbin appearing table stuck to the bottom of a briefcase?
That'd work wouldn't it? Neal

...Or better still just take a Harbin folding table out from a suitcase, let it set itself up and put the siutcase on top.

I took a simple cymbal stand ($18.00 on sale at Guitar Center) and made an adapter that I fit to the top of the shaft. It screws into a simple pipe flange mounted to the underside of whatever table top you want. It's extremely stable but won't fit into a briefcase. It fits in my trunk along with the top. Sorry if my post isn't right on topic.

Check out the Harbin Table plans at the last pages of the Encyclopaedia of Dove Magic Vol. 5. You can just adapt it to the table you want. You have to make your own spring hinges.

I'm also a fan of a music or drum stand with a nicely covered plywood top. It would be just as easy to transport and just as functional as the briefcase table, except you wouldn't have to carry around a heavy briefcase with wheels hanging off of it.
You can also get a lot of milage out of the old tray-jack and plywood top style og stand. (easy to carry over your shoulder and lots of work space). Good luck! |

I have a briefcase table that I made... an Anvil style briefcase purchased at Home Depot ($25.00) A microphone stand ($20.00) and a microphone stand flange ($5.00) that's screwed onto the briefcase. The briefcase then screws right onto the stand. Open the case and do your show... work's great. Total cost $50.00

I use either of the following:
A lightweight harbin type table that you can see right on my homepage. It's small but great for a show where you're using it to hold a few props. I have a case on the floor behind the table to hold props after they are used up. After the show, I fold up the table, close and pick up the case, and walk off. Perfect if you're doing a show with multiple performers and you either need to go on or off quickly to/from a clean stage. -or- A restaurant tray stand covered with a black drape and one of my close-up/busking table tops on top of it. This is larger and sturdy enough to do cups&balls or anything else. In this case it's a bit more effort to clear the stage. I would use this when that does not matter. Both look great. Both are lightweight. One is larger and more sturdy. One is smaller, lighter in weight, less functional, and very convenient. I am extremely pleased with this combo.

About the original post, concerning the "pop open table":
A friend of mine has one of these. I don't know if there are different manufacturers, or designs, but the one he has is NOT worth buying or building. It looks cool, and it's fun to operate, but it is not very sturdy. It might be okay for a few SMALL props, but you would NOT want to set a prop case on it. If you have questions, feel free to PM or email me. Good luck!

Also, the cymbal stands are available in many models that are quite sturdy because the drummer is striking the cymbal with lateral as well as vertical force. A flimsy cymbal stand will be knocked over by most rock drummers.
