I want to create an illusion of a shadow transforming from an animal to a human. It would be projected onto a sheet from the rear. I want to create the illusion of the animal magically transforming and then the light goes out, the sheet drops to the floor, and the person is standing there. Does anyone have any experience with video morph, and has anyone ever tried an illusion like this? How would I accomplish this? Any input would be appreciated!

You would need a software that could do this for you.. Something like 'Shake' on apple could accomplish this.. Just import mattes of the shadow shapes you want to use - then use the morph node included on the program.
Also, if you are projecting from the rear - the light from the projector would cast a shadow of things happening 'backstage'.. this type of illusion is often done with front projection that is made to look like a rear spotlight..
Good luck!

I like the idea of projecting the shadow from the front. However, I do a lot of outdoor shows and I have no idea how to hide the projector nor how to account for the light coming from the projector. Thanks for the tip, though.

You would simply import the morph effect into digital video. You would need to begin with a recognizable shadow profile of the animal and end up with a recognizable shadow profile of a person.

If you need help with this, I recommend you check with Fred Goode of Digital Production Studios. Fred is a magician and knows how to be discrete about magic secrets. He also known Mac and Windows video and graphics software and may already have the morph effect, in which case he would just need photos of your two shadow outlines to make and mail you a DVD for use in projecting.

The link is for info only. You would have to contact Fred to discuss it with him.

Damien666,
I am really intrigued by the idea of the projector in the front. It would make things much easier. I found a way to hide the projector. The question is how do you simulate the back light? I would guess that I could use a leko to have light shine only on the sides, but keep the middle clear. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

The prop is built. It is a 5' x 5' mirror base. The illusion starts with a volunteer being covered with a cloth and slowly gets smaller & smaller until he's a bunny. After some comedy by-play, I turn him back into a bunny. My thought is to put the bunny on the platform, erect a sheet across the front of the platform, turn on the "light", and have the shadow visually turn into the person. I have all the physical aspects of the illusion built. I just need to create the shadow. I'd say I've got $200 for the shadow video.

I created a preliminary morph clip using a trial program. It is located here:

I don't think it is that convincing, mainly because they are still images morphing into one another. I think it would be much better to have the bunny hopping around and then morph into the person who is also moving.

Any further comments about making this look realistic?
