I just received Bob Solari's latest effect "Mind Blank", here's the effect description that came with the trick:
===== "A spectator freely selects one of the six face down cards that are held in a spread. The performer explains that five of the cards are exactly the same, and one is different. The performer turns the five cards face up showing them all to be the same. The spectator turns his selected card face up. It is the odd card! Works every time. No skill, no force, no rough and smooth cards. Instant reset. Learn in minutes." ===== Mind Blank comes with 2 pages of instructions detailing the setup, performance & handling, and step-by-step photos for the effect. It also comes with a card wallet with the necessary cards you need to perform with. I received blue Bicycle backed cards. Bob also included his business card. After trying this out, I can say this is a wonderfully practical and powerful effect. "Practical" because it's carried neatly in a wallet and you can take it anywhere you want and at a moment's notice blow people away with it. Also as mentioned, it literally resets instantly which is a great plus. The effect to the spectator is a strong mentalism type outcome where he/she chooses the only "odd" card out of the six. The trick is also very easy to do yet packs a punch. Another thing that I especially like is Bob's suggested patter/presentation for this trick. It fits perfectly into the routine and makes complete sense for the spectator in what they experience. Mind Blank is $10 US and can be purchased at http://www.bobsolarimagic.com |

Steve, re your review, I have a set of "Dots Impossible" cards (but not the instructions) in a box of stuff from my childhood -- weekend trips to Al's Magic were really looked forward to. (I also have the sequel, "Dots Incredible.") But am I wrong -- aren't both these effects ("Dots Impossible" and "Mind Blank") Nick Trost's "8-Card Brainwave" but with 6 cards? Or is the handling different?

Well Steve, your review isn't a kind review. We knew that it isn't on original effect and that is about ...eh... everything. Not how the the handling goes, etc. etc.

Thanks Steve for your review and comparison between Mind Blank and Dot's Impossible. I can see how they are similar/same... However for me, I do like the "blank" presentation that Bob Solari introduces in Mind Blank. I just don't agree with the 0/5 rating...especially if Bob really did come up with this independently. To me, it's still a good presentation and effect. |

Sounds like a trick I remember from years ago called 'Pick me, don't Pick me', atleast I think that is what it is called, and I came up with a way to do it with a borrowed deck, though I bet that idea isn't even new with me!

Is Dot's Impossible marketed anymore?

Different trick, different handling. fvdbeek said; "Well Steve, your review isn't a kind review. We knew that it isn't on original effect and that is about ...eh... everything. Not how the the handling goes, etc. etc." We knew it wasn't an original effect? Well I did and said as much in my review - but where in this thread prior to your statement did anyone mention the fact that Mind Blank is not original? In addition, I see no difference between the handling of Dot's Impossible and Mind Blank. digitaltrip said; "Thanks Steve for your review and comparison between Mind Blank and Dot's Impossible. I might have been a wee bit more understanding if the original trick was something rarely seen or known about. Fact is, Al Cohen's Dot's Impossible is a classic and still sells very well today. There is no excuse on Mr. Solari's part for not knowing the existence of Dot's Impossible. close_up_act said; "This is one that I just have too purchase....sounds great,,,,and I agree with digitaltrip,,,i like the blank card idea" Cool. Go purchase the original Dot's Impossible and replace three of the cards with blank cards. Christopher Kavanagh said; "Is Dot's Impossible marketed anymore?" Chris, no disrespect here, but if you had read my review of Mind Blank, you would already know that the original trick Dot's Impossible is available at most magic dealers. If anyone has contact with Bob Solari, it would be well worth letting him know about 'Dot's Impossible' and getting his reaction.
He could either: 1 - Realise he's "reinvented" a trick and take his off the market. 2 - Realise he's "reinvented" a trick and contact Royal Magic (or Al Cohen) and come up with a compromise that could include permission, royalties or crediting. 3 - Deny that his trick is anything like 'Dot's Impossible' and continue to market 'Mind Blank' regardless. It's VERY important for creators to do their research before releasing a new product on the market.

I for one find it a tough pill to swallow that nobody who is "inventing" tricks could not have come across "Dots Impossible".
Heck usually the first job of any "creator" is due dilligance. To kind of research what it is you are "creating". It would be tough to walk into a magic shop at any time in your life and defend the position you didn't know of "Dots Impossible". We used to sell them at Magic Inc. all the time. I hold out hope it was a simple misunderstanding.

Agreed Tim, and not as a lynch mob.
To ask the question: "What specifically gives me reason to believe this item is something new in our craft"? requires a shift of focus/perspective and a respect for both the craft and the rest of the community. Usually a good idea to bring one's new findings to a vet ( ie process of vetting )

Well, there are a couple differences between Nick Trost's 8-Card Brainwave and Al Cohen's Dot's Impossible. The former has the spectator seeing eight cards (not six) and all the faces are obviously different (the front of the cards is clearly shown). In the end, the card the spectator chooses is turned over to reveal a red back, while the seven remaining cards all have blue backs. To me it's clearly a different effect - similiar, but still different. However, Mind Blank uses six cards (as does Dot's Impossible) and the effect is the same. The spectator chooses the odd faced card. Also, the remaining cards are all apparently the same face design and all share the same back design. Just my opinion - I stand by my review.

Steve, folks
When the student learns the display principle (Marlo's?) they are expected to discover such applications on their own. IMHO all such tricks are pretty much student level exercises as they start and end in very contrived and vulnerable situations where a real-world audience might want to touch and examine the unusual cards just to see what they are. Just my perspective, Jon

Well, this is why I don't release the original magic I created: You guys always seem to find some small thing to conect new magic to something developed years ago.
For those that are not so obsessed with the past, I have a small booklet on my card trick called "that kooky card" I'm releasing. Get this: A signed card keeps coming back to the top of the deck, no matter how many times the performer places it into the middle of the deck. I'm sure the "know it alls" that have barely 40 years experience each will find something that "might" resemble it. :rotf:
