Why disappointing? It really disproves nothing. It only shows other ways the out-of-body state can be prompted.

And nobody has yet fully explained why the human body loses a timy amount of weight at the moment of death.

I agree with CaptainKid. The experiment, although interesting, really proves nothing. Also, the suggestion that the self is perceived where the eyes are (however it was phrased) may be true in our culture, but other cultures understand the self to be in the heart, as our own did in the past. In addition, experimental results, to be complete, would have to account for all the phenomena associated with OOBE, which this certainly does not.

That loss of weight is approximated at 21 grams, hence the movie 21 grams. A lot of people missed this movie assuming it had something to do with a powdery white substance, quite to the contrary, rent this movie and I'm sure you will be amazed. One of the best story lines I have ever seen.

Indeed, many people of the day maintained (and some still maintain) that the body gains weight after death. Gotama

I agree with Gotama, the whole 21 grams thing is an uncertainty to put it mildly.
Besides, at no time during life do the lungs ever completely empty out, but after death, perhaps they collapse, expelling 21 grams of air.. or, there's the fact that you usually(?)relieve yourself immediately after death too.. well now, there's a nice analogy for the soul. lol But, if it were the soul, that still wouldn't quite make sense either, would it.. I mean, isn't the "soul" supposed to be pure energy? Unless I'm gravely mistaken, (hehe) Energy doesn't have mass (hence weight), only matter has mass/weight, or bits of matter such as subatomic particles. So how could the soul have weight?

Reference SPOOK, Science Tackles the Afterlife by Mary Roach, Chapter 2, "How to Weigh a Soul--What happens when a man (or a mouse, or a leech) dies on a scale" for an overview of scant research.

BB King once said,"A man that don't like the blues, got a hole in his soul".
So, If the soul is pure energy, and has no mass, Then what exactly would Mysticians 51% of Baba's soul look like. Can you post a pic of your holdings brother Myst? I think if your 51% were viewed inside my exclusive, paranormal, electromechanical, soul viewing machine, it would look like a puff of smoke from one of those "alleged" cubanas found in the lips of Bro. Baba himself. Or maybe not.I think Baba may have soul leakage, and all this time we thought it was adult onset incontenence.

Hmm. E=mc^2, where c is the speed of light. So 21*c*c=a whole lot of energy. Maybe that's why Hell is so hot -- that's where all that energy went.

Yes, you are right, Gotama, but I meant to refer only to the common conception of Hell. As I sit here I can see the Bhavacakra I have hanging from a shelf next to Green Tara.
It seems to be almost a general principle that peoples in hot climates believe in a hot Hell and those in a cold climate believe in a cold Hell. Exceptions largely relate to the origin of their religious beliefs. (This is more than anyone wanted to know, I am sure!)

Hi Barry,
First of all, you read at http://www.ghostweb.com/soul.html Dr. MacDougall's original article that appeared in the April 1907 issue of American Medicine. You can look at some information concerning the experiments at Snopes.com. Additionally, you can read a short summary at http://www.abc.net.au/science/k2/moments/s1105956.htm. You may also want to read two books by Mary Roach "Stiff" and "Spook." Her book "Stiff" concerns waht happens to a body at death. During her reseach she ran across the MacDougall experiments. She was intrigued so she wrote "Spook" that deal with the search for an afterlife. Outside of those sources, you would have to find a library with old volumes (1907-1910) of some the major scientific journals. Hope this helps. Gotama
