As the cliche goes, men don't ask for directions, women can't read maps. If she asked the average male laureate for directions they'd be lucky if they could blurt out their own name.

I have great respect for the guy that was holding the microphone, that he didn't crack up. Of course, he may not have even been listening.

On the one hand, I stand behind my comment in its entirety. College students freak out during oral exams. That is a fact. I have witnessed high IQ students turn to Jello.
On the other hand, this woman was mis-identified by Balducci. She is not Ashely Zais, a student at Wofford College, but Caitlin Upton, a high school student who is 17 years old. I would still rather think that she was nervous. But she is not the same woman who received a Palmetto scholarship and majored in psychology and minored in religion. I still think you are too hard on her; but I can no longer defend her as a scholarship receiving student who somehow collapsed under pressure. I would ask this: is it really funny? Jeff |

It seems to me that this video has brought forward some very ugly responses. What sort of adult enjoys insulting a 17-year-old child who has been publicly humiliated?

My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

Sorry about misidentifying her before. I have that syndrome / disorder that makes it hard for me to sometimes recognise / differentiate between faces etc. I'm being serious, even though most of you probably think I'm kidding.
Anyway, some of the comments on the page kregg posted are quite incisive. I see she finished 3rd runner up, or 4th out of the final 5. Just imagine how #5 feels, and does anyone have a link to a youtube video of her? This next comment is sort of a nit-picky one. But that has never stopped me before, so why should it now? Regarding the video kregg posted the link to, did anyone notice that on the morning show, after being given a chance to prepare and try again, Caitlin Upton still did not answer the question that was actually asked? She was asked WHY are so many Americans unable to identify the USA on a map. She never answered that question, at least not directly. Rather, first she gave evidence casting doubt that the problem even existed ("my friends and I"), then she suggested that the survey might be mistaken ("IF the statistics are correct"), then she proposed a remedy without first identifying the source of the problem (which is often an unwise thing to do). From her answer you can infer what she thought the problem was (i.e., people can't read maps because of a lack of geography education), but she never actually stated that out loud. She has all the makings of a fine, future politician. Oh, well, there are my comments, have at them. Just give me a few minutes to slip into my flame retardant suit.

Any answer that could be given impromptu is most likely conjecture. Who was sampled? What map were they given? What level of accuracy was expected? What was their educational backgrounds? etc. etc. I'd love to know how many people around the world cannot locate their own country on a map. Of course, people from the big ones--Russia, Canada, US, Australia, Brazil, China--should have a much easier task than the rest. John

But her answer doesn't miss the point of the question entirely. In essence, she doubts the original statistic, which is a reasonable reponse. But she says this inelegantly and indirectly, I'll admit. Of course, it's a stupid question. Indeed. If I were asked the question (in a context other than national television), my first response would be about two minutes of silence while I sorted it out. Then I would ask, "where did you get that statistic?" On national television I would have probably mumbled incoherently, much like her. I'm just glad my attempts to hit a curve ball weren't televised. Jeff |

I had to stop the video after her first three words.

I just saw the girl on TV. First w/out all the make up she looks about five years younger, meaning she looks her age, and she is very bright. She said she didn't hear the question and was confused and what people were indicating out of site from the camera further confused her and she ended up sounding like an idiot.

Kidding! She just had one of those disjointed public speaking moments.

You know, I feel so bad for her. Millions laughing and goofing on her, songs written about her appearance. The stress could cause her to turn sexually to an old fat guy with a beard and...and... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LAk4w__FgMU
