If your going to learn matrix(4 coins and only 4 coins with 4 cards) look the the creator Al Schneider. This is a great effect when done "right". http://www.woorldmagiccenter.com. I also have a video of matrix on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xdczDCT1FcE.
I feel Al's routine shines way ahead of the rest, its structure is nearly perfect, when the routine is performed correctly.

In all the years I've been doing coin magic I've seen very few coin Matrix/Assemblies that looked MAGICAL. David Williamson's (mentioned above) and Al's original.

The whole point of the effect is that you cover the coins with cards SO YOU CAN'T TOUCH THEM! Too many involve obvious physical manipulation of the cards and the coins, and that ruins the illusion.

Ok jus curious, how do pple like Shoot Ogawa come up with their moves and slights?? Or more, how do they bring their matix effects or even magic to the next level. IF we can understand these things, we're on the road to being an even better magician

Bobo's <- motile

The Stars of Magic <- chink-a-chink and Ross Bertram's assembly

Matrix <- Al Schneider's seminal routine.

A short list of readings that are pertinent to your current investigation of "matrix".

Just knowing some core sleights, and a notepad. You can create your own matrix routine. An easy one, hard one, any matrix and most better, it's yours.

Use the notepad to write everything, especially draw the matrix position, and use arrow marks to plan your travel. After that, figure out the nessesary sleight to get it.

Most matrix need spongey surface like a closeup pad. If you don't have it, sofas surface is a good subtitute.

I agree Gary, notes make the play! Ever since I started taking notes when learning a move or routine my process has picked up! Some of my pages look like a cross between a football play book and scribble notes from a boring lecture in school and it may take a military code breaker to figure it out but it's sure aided me!

You can do Yank Hoe's original with metal bottlecaps. He used sugar cubes. Also don't forget the old Sympathetic Coins with the handkerchief and two covers (envelopes or cards or squares of cardboard). It is very good in that there is the penetration effect of each coin passing up through the cloth to "arrive". So old it is like new again.

I have a few Handlings With a hank where the coin goes under the hank! Some print in softbound Books! And some Waiting To go into one of the hard bounds Down the Line! And there are some backfire Handlings Too! Smile

I've mentioned it before- the World's Greatest Magic dvd on Matrix on Coin Assemblies is great.
