Premier pro is certainly way to go - but very advanced.

Pinnacle is decent also. I have both Pinnacle Studio 8 and Ulead Video Studio, but I have only used them a very little bit. Each one has strong points. I havent' used Windows Movie Makeer except to resize a video.

What is the simplest manager for less than huge/hi-res files to simply clip out parts or string clips together?

Also... to take wmv and convert to avi/divx?

Many people still use tape, and is the easiest to edit since most camcorders are tape format.the DVD units can be edited in a simular matter, its a matter of start & stop.maybe someday I will go total digital when they get them to be as simple to use & reliable as tapes were.
theres a lot to learn out there, many interesting subjects, and hobbies to enjoy

"Many people still use tape, and is the easiest to edit since most camcorders are tape format."

LOL! Tape is easy to edit??!!

Editing tape is a HUGE nightmare!

I'd have to disagree with the most camcorders are tape format!

Sorry to disagree!

Videotape/aido tape being phased out I know ,the only 3 digital recordable formats I found reliable are Sony Mini discs, computer hard drives, and scan disc type cards.
many of you computer people have see troubles with CD-R`s and DVD-R`s
I have seen very good results with pre recorded digital media, shure wish the recordable media was as reliable.

Final Cut Express ($) or Final Cut Pro ($$$), or Avid ($$$$) are the way to go. The easiest platform for a beginner is iMovie on a Mac.

I know stereo digital editing is easy I transfered over 500 cassetts to Sony mini discs back in 1998 then made CD-R off them
John would be nice to have a program to turn AVI`s to burn DVD`s that play in regular DVD players with all player compatibility.what makes this a good program is that you can burn disc to play in older DVD players to when you share them with others,I had freinds burn DVD`s that don't work right,or they quit woking after a few plays ,or when they get a few years old ,I`ll wait until they sell a DVD burner that is as reliable at playing/recording as VHS,or better yet plays as good as facrory made DVD`s. I see the trouble with this technology is that it is still fairly new,and theres still bugs in it.I`m guessing tape recording was not good at it`s beginning.
