I am trying to construct a routine and was wondering how to make a sliding knot on a piece of rope, I have seen it done in several tricks, but I really don't want to purchase an entire trick just to make a sliding knot... Any help would be greatly appreciated...Thanks.

What? Any arts and crafts person could make this for you! Nothing to it!

Take a small length of rope and tie it loosely around another length of rope (of the same diameter). Slide the small length off the longer length. Cut the tails off the small length as close to the loop part as you can. Sew, the two ends to the portion that crosses itself to make the tie. Viola! Now you have a fake knot that can slip freely along a length of rope. Of course now you have to figure out what you are going to do with this thing!

Make a separate knot from a small piece of rope. Then wrap a piece of scotch tape (with the sticky side out) around your long piece of rope and attach your false knot to the tape and it will slide along the larger rope with ease. You can also make the knot disappear at will by palming the knot off the rope.

Another way is to take a short piece of rope, tie it in a knot, and glue the ends together with craft glue. Not Elmer's, but craft glue, it is flexible even when it is dry.

I would tie a knot in a small piece of rope and just use it like that, because if you throw it out, it is clean - just use the left over bits of rope from the first thread!

I would do the Professors nightmare up to the point where you have three equal lengths of rope, tie the small length around the large(this becomes the sliding knot)then tie the medium length to the end of the long piece.Place your foot on the end of the long piece, your hand holds the end of the medium peice, now slide the knot with your free hand BINGO.

When you say you don't know how to make a sliding knot it's not clear whether you mean you don't know do the trick where you make it look like you tie a knot in a piece of rope that you can then move along the rope... or whether you don't know how to form a piece of rope into a knot toast as a secret gimmick.

It's great that you are asking for help... but as you need to ask for this most basic of help the prospect that you are going to be able to "construct a routine" for yourself is very unlikely. If you have an interest I would suggest getting a basic introductory book on rope magic which will not only give you the answer to your question but will also provide you with a good foundation on huge amounts of other information that will allow you to be better able to construct a routine for yourself.

Abbott's Encyclopedia of Rope Tricks for Magicians compiled by Stewart james is widely available and an excellent place to start and will provide you with enough to keep you busy for years.

Steiner1000, is no longer with us here on the Café. He will not be able to participate, his profile is gone. Sad.

Does anyone have a recommendation for another book on rope magic besides Abbott's Encyclopedia of Rope Tricks?
Thank you,

Daryl's acrobatic knot uses a sliding knot, but it is the routine that makes it slide not a gimmicked knot.

For around $5 you can buy the Karl Fulves "self working rope magic" that is not an encyclopedia, buy is full of gems.
