Has anyone who preordered this DVD a few months ago actually rteceived theirs yet? I was wondering because I see it being advertised at most major dealers including Penguin Magic who promise shipping within 1-2 days. None of these dealers mention its a preorder so it must be immediately available.
I find it frustrating to have preordered and received no notification of delays or estimated shipping dates. I thought one of the main advantages of preordering is that it allows you to be among the first batch of shipments. Perhaps I am mistaken and should not bother with preordering from Kozmo Magic in the future. |

I have my copy and I love it!I've always found them to be reliable.I'm sure your
copy has been sent. Most people know Chris Capehart to be a great performer so I enjoy watching him however he owns the tricks he does so well that it would be difficult to copy his presentations if that is the only reason you buy dvd's.[I'm not addressing you magicbern just being general. There is some great advice on this set.

I have said I won't pre-order with a shop, but will always with trusted creators or producers. I think it's a great way to say " I appreciate you putting your own money up to bring Magicians to us that we'd never see otherwise". That's a gamble by the way. They have no idea if a an underground guy will be well received.
Kozmo Magic is the good guy on the block. They have brought us guys like Geoff Williams, Lonnie Chevrie, Cellini, Justin Miller and CHRIS CAPEHART. Your money is safe with Komo. He answers all e-mails and PM's. He takes care of everyone. Have a question, just PM him. He'll give you a fast, straight answer. When I pre-ordered the Jailhouse set, he let everyone know how the project was going. Then mine came and the case was cracked. No hassle, no fuss, he sent me a new one. No non-sense about sending the cracked one back, etc.

Thank you for clarifying the status of the order. I am looking forward to receiving a quality product. My apologies if I came across too strongly in criticism - it wasn't intended to slight your business ethics.

I just go the set today. I would watch the second disk first to see the INCREDIBLE interveiw between Chris Capehart and Kozmo. It makes the show on disk one make sense. What I mean is that I was watching disk one and thinking "you can do that in a kid show?" over and over. I thought you had to keep them quiet, make them sit down, etc.
Chris makes it a party for them. Why have a room full of quiet kids? Chris explains the recipe for a succesful show. I was floored on what I DID NOT KNOW about this area of magic. Chris tells things that I would not have expected a Pro to tip. The second disk also had the Head Shrinker and Silk performance/explanation ( you'll add both if you don't do these ). Disk one has Chris's show and I was knocked over. This is how I want to do a children's show. I had it all wrong and put it off for years because I wnated to be myself and didn't think you could do that. You can have as much fun as the kids! I was glued to this set all day. What a DVD set. One of the all time best. Don't pass this by because you don't do kid shows. There is info here to help you as a performer and a person ( Chris is not a "people steal form me" performer. He's seen people perform his show since he started doing shows in 1971 and only says " I hope they do it well". I'm knocked out by this DVD set. That put Mathwew Dowden's "Party Animal, Bill Malone's ( Here I Go Again" and "Kiddin Around" as my picks for best DVD's of 2007 and sets I'd never sell.

I have to agree. Capehart is a tour de force. He gets such great mileage out of such mundane props. Amazing to behold. And he breaks all the rules of crowd control, and with such gusto. Great stuff.

I struggle with children's magic or at least putting a string of effects together for them. I bought this to see if it would help me with entertaining the kids in my family at get togethers, because family always say"do something for the kids". I thought Chris's approach was fantastic. A very street wise character, not like other childrens characters I've seen which I definately couldn't pull off. There are a few real gems on this, he is a very creative guy with no over the top props. For me, even though I don't do childrens shows, this was one of the best DVD's I bought for 2007

I have a different opinion than takeachance, who admittedly does not do children's shows. I purchased this dvd set since I enjoyed Mr. Capehart's previous Miser Dream DVD. The major problem and criticism that I have in the Kidin Around DVD set is Chris' theme that he runs throughout his show and into his routines. Mr. Capehart begins the show with a 5 minute introduction telling his audience that they are going to play for prizes such as an ipod and other high end electronic games or products. The problems with this are that he gets the kids so excited about winning these electronic items that 1. they are more excited about winning these items than seeing the magic and 2. he has no intention of giving away any of these items. This is just a ploy to get them excited and interested in the magic show but he never delivers on his promise. In my opinion, this is a very bad ploy and theme even if Mr. Capehart is an excellent performer.
You see this tactic again employed in his magic coloring book routine where 3 volunteeers are asked to join him on stage at a chance to win an expensive electronic toy/game. In Mr. Capehart's routine, all 3 volunteers ar losers and are told that they are losers. No one wins anything and everyone is dismissed from the stage (even the smallest of the children) as a loser. This is poor handling of volunteers especially young children. While a novice chidlren's magician may gleam some good routining from these dvds, it will teach the amateur or novice children's magician with very poor use of ploys and promises to get the audience excited only to disappoint them and with very bad routining in making children feel as losers. I also left disappointed after watching these dvds. Michael

I agree with you Michael, and thought that was odd. Not something I'd do. I did however like his character and lota bowl effect along with his misers dream. However, I totally agree with your thoughts on the prizes thing!

No disrespect to anyone here...i appreciate you buying the capehart dvd set and this has nothing to do with me being involved with the project....the thing is....this works for chris capehart...and it will work for others however, its our hope both chris's and mine that folks take whats there and create their own way...chris thinks outside the box and this works for him so theres no reason to beleive that it wouldn't work for others...now you might not like his style but you cant say that this idea is a bad one...you can only say its a bad idea for you...
in addition I beleive that there are some really great ideas on this set...and for me, a working pro...a line is worth the price of a dvd set.... in my opinion we should not judge a project buy the question, can you do everything that is on it...because in reality no one can use everything off anyones set... we are encouraging everyone to find their own way and hopefully this will help guys thanks for the support and buying the set enjoy koz |

Koz,
I was surprised that Mr. Capehart used this tactic and approach especially sicne he is such a great performer. I cannot see this tactic work for anyone and would not recommend it period. That beingsaid, there are still many terrific routines presented in the dvd set and would recommend them but not the giving away prizes themes unless the performer actually delivers on his/her promises. Perhaps instead of high end electronics a small toy could be in fact given away and perhaps instead of all 3 volunteers losing, all 3 or even one volunteer can win a small prize. Michael

My take on it, and I also wouldn't use the same theme, is the DVD shows performers that they do not have to be trapped by what I call the "Sunday School Magician". By this I mean you don't have to be a silk vanishing version of Mr. Rogers and too many cling to that style even when it puts kids to sleep. You can be edgier at a kids show, you can tease them, you can be louder and more wild. I don't have a problem with the promising of a prize, I've done it before for single routines, Chris just carries it further and the kids don't win and they are not offended by it.
So go out and try the character you always thought would be fun and see if it works, it may make you the top dog or it may make you re-evaluate your approach, just don't be stuck in the mud. I appreciate that aspect of the DVD as well as so much more found on the set. |

But how do you know that the kids were not offended by not winning anything or not offended or insulted by being summarily dismissed from the stage as being losers? Just look at the kids' faces when they leave the stage. To me, they seemed offended and insulted and dissappointed. Young children are faced with failure everyday in school, in class, in sports, and in their personal relationships. I do not think they need more as a specatator in a magic show in front of strangers and in front of people they know. Magic for children (and for adults) should fun and positive, giving them a good feeling about what is possible and a sense of accomplishment. When I do the topsy turvy bottles or similar effects, I am the one that is wrong, not the child, and the child is the one who gets it right in the end. In addition, many times children are promised things by adults only to be dissappointed. Too many children do not trust or believe adults. This type of promising electronic items in a magic show only to fail to deliver them only reinforces this type of mistrust. I have nothing against being edgy if the character is developed and portrayed right, but promising high end electronic gifts to young children who are "successful" and beat the magician but then always "fail", is simply not the type of character that I want to be or remembered as. Best wishes, Michael

I base it on watching childrens reactions for several years....that and I asked my wife to watch it. She is an educated child development expert and retired kindergarten teacher who knows how to herd 'em, teach 'em, and read 'em. She didn't appreciate the level of 'you may win' that went on but she felt they were enjoying the game of it all and didn't seem overly bothered by it. I, again, also felt that approach isn't one I would take so actually I'm in your camp and I certainly don't have the same sharpness of an edge that Chris has but I am more into the edge than I am the goody two shoes approach, which I think kids find boring.
I'll be honest with you, my wife uses techniques magicians use in her teaching all the time, or use too before retiring, as a teaching tool. For example silly hats or a hat that doesn't fit her head will be used. She'll point to something blue and mis-call it green so the kids will happily correct her. She'll pretend to drop something on her foot, etc.. When I told her it was the same stuff that makes kids shows magic work she wasn't surprised but was surprised that some didn't realize it is teaching technique as well. Closing please do NOT be a character you are not comfertable with. What works for Chris works for Chris (I have to admit I am not familiar with the region he lives in so I don't know the mentality of the kids there, I know New York kids are different than Georgian kids and different than California kids etc..) but it doesn't have to work for you! |
