I also agree. His routines are great! Anyone who does magic for kids will love these DVDs. But I also am little turned off by the way he treated the children. I am not sure that kids in NY or CA or GA or anywhere want to be called losers. But hey, we all love Chris and everyone hates me....so who am I to say anything?

Chris's character works for him. The message I got from the DVD is that you don't have to be stuck in a preconceived mold of what we think a children's performer should be.
Here's what I think Chris did: he treated them like adults. Kids have rules all day long. Here they got to scream and act up. I had a tape one time and the fellow said he establishes control and lays out all these rules. That started sounding more like a bad job. Now, I think he didn't have much control in his own life and neeeded to get it somewhere. The interview segment with Koz and Chris was gold!

MAgicSanta,
Thank you very much for your further clarification and for your wife's input. I certainly respect your wife's opinion especially her being a retired kindergarten teacher. Having a 5 year old son in kindergarden and a 3 year old son in part time nursery, I am sure that she knows a lot about child psychology and behavior. I agree that everyone has to pick a persona that he/she is comfortable with. What is good and works for Mr. Capehart may not be good for someone else. As I stated, being edgy can be fun especially with older children and teens. Tha being said, I sitll recommend these dvds but I would be careful in imitating Mr. Capehart's style portrayed in this dvd set, or anyone elses' style. Best wishes, Michael

Thank you. My wife is very good for kids, she isn't one of those sweet teachers but the lil' buggers would follow her around.
Cyrus, kids are lil' weirdo's. I call them lil' punks and hoodlums and it cracks them up. I tell 'em I'm going to get 'em into a headlock and they think it is great and want to be in a headlock! I'm sure some sensative kids might get upset but I've not encountered one yet. |

The kids on the DVD really like Chris and don't take him seriously. There are a bunch of moments in the show which show his "feet of clay" so that the kids get that he's vulnerable. And he's one of those guys who's gruff on the surface but nice underneath, and the kids get that too.
It reminds me of some people's relatives that constantly tease or give the kids in the family grief; the kids figure that guy out quickly and think it's fun. |

Yeah, they recognize it is fun. One thing for those reading, you have to deliver it in a way that is not serious. One on one you can really scare a kid but if they know it is just playful they'll crack up. How many times have you seen kids act like they were scared of 'a monster' but they scream and run back to hit it? That is the way they are, cute lil' devils.

I have watched this DVD set so much, I'm surprised it still plays.
And....Sunday is my first kid shows. For years I turned them down. I like kids, but had no interest in building a "kids" act. Seeing Capehart ( and lsitening very carefully to his incredible interview ) I know I can do a show that is fun, without changing allot that I already do. I always thought kids shows were just a bunch of "kid show" tricks one after another. Capehart educated me on that. He's a master of routining and doing callbacks ( like in standup comedy ). And he trusts that the kids are smart ( and they are ). This is an incredible DVD set and an important one for this genre of magic.

Okay - I also had the chance to watch this a couple of times by now. I have to say that there is some great stuff inside. For me, the biggest learning is to watch his presentational style . . .

Hey Chris, how did your first kid show go?

It went better than I could have hoped for.
First off, there is a GIANT lesson I learned from Capehart. Years ago, when I was approached for a Kid's show, I did some research and was not happy with what I heard. BIG time entertainers advised on how to gain control of the kids and make them behave by sitting down and being quiet. So...I decided this was not the niche for me. WRONG! It's not just that Capehart has a different opinion, it's because he has the RIGHT opinion. Get them to scream, jump and...ready? BE KIDS! So, instead of me being a control freak for 45 minutes, I let them have fun being kids. Now....that doesn't mean there is chaos. You have to get the Capehart DVD set to get the skinny on his thinking on how to let them be kids. I'm just saying it works. And....I brought my guitar and played a song that I only do for adult audiences because of a couple of words that are rough ( their parents say the words, however;-) I left those words out and it didn't change the song. Just like in my grown up show, they sang and as much as I think the magic I presented touched them, they seemed to have loved the sing along more than anything. GET THIS DVD SET!!!

There are two types, in general, of kids show magicians. The first group is there to bore the kids and kiss up to the parents....this is what I call the Sunday School approach to magic. The second is the group that realize a good magic show for kids is basically playing with them for 45 minutes. It is fine they make noise, they are part of the show, every one of them. If they sit quietly like good lil' angels then I think the show is failing. Glad you did well!
Oh, I have a new kids show DVD I'm gonna watch tomorrow, should be interesting. |

I've got the DVD's and they have inspired me to maybe do a kids show, something I've avoided like the plague. Your comments Chris and Magicsanta have helped me think its possible for a guy like me. I'm an oilfield worker and until I saw Capehart never thought about it. Its certainly has encouraged me, as I'm asked constantly to perform for kids and always decline.

Kids shows are fun to do. You just have to pay attention to the reactions, when you get a good one you work it, if something falls flat you shift gears.

One thing to remember, well a couple. It is very important if you do kids shows that you actually like doing kids shows and like kids, they can tell if you are faking it. I've seen a kids performer who just was tired of doing it and didn't like kids and the only one who didn't see he was hostile was himself. If you plan on doing it just because it really is the best way to make a living doing magic you'll find yourself not only hurting yourself but damaging the field for those who do enjoy it.

I once was at a party where the magician was clearly drunken. Andy

I see too many kid magicians like the one magicsanta just described. When you act all crotchety with the kids it might be time to graze in the magic pasture.
