Hey everyone, just wondering if anyone has an idea for use of a hooked coin in a routine.

If ever their was a gimmick worthy of praise, this is it! It is the most underused, underated, and mis-understood gimmick in magic. I love using them.

Bobo's "Modern Coin Magic" has several routines with the hook coin.

Hi, I have a one coin routine with a hooked
coin coming out in my big hard bound book.
(Hopefully Coming Sometime This Year. It's in
it's last edit right now.) I also have routines in print with 2&3 coin hook Gimicks.
There is a good little booklet called Here's Hoo on Coins By Bill Spooner. I don't know if it's in print now or not. you could also use a steal core coin and a magnet in your back pocket if you don't like hooks! thanks.

I've never personally used a hooked coin before, but I once saw Rocco (of the D'Lites) perform a comedy effect with one. The coin constantly vanished in front of a spectator only to reappear hooked to the back of his shirt several times over again. He presented it in a 'Paper Balls Over the Head' fashion, which made it really enjoyable.

Fred Kaps used to fool magicians with a coin vanish, which utilized a hook coin. He would actually hook the coin to the back of his hand-OUCH! Smile This is true. The coin just nips the flesh. There should be no blood involved (unless you're Teller, or perhaps The Amazing J.) Smile

Hidden away on one of the pages of Steinmeyer's "The Complete Jarrett" is a very clever coin vanish by Guy Jarrett using a hooked coin. Bare-handed, sleeves rolled up (or no sleeves, t-shirt). Not the same as Kaps idea of hooking onto back of hand. Both sides of hands shown empty after the coin is vanished. Coin can then reappear.

If you don't have "The Complete Jarrett".... get it! Jarrett's raw ideas combined with Jim Steinmeyers clarifications and illustrations is a winning combination.

"Here's Hoo With Coins" by Bill Spooner
Had several excellent ideas with hooked coins
Including (my favorite) an effect that you perform when surrounded.
The method is beyond devious, I saw him perform this at a convention, on the dealers floor years ago, and when I could stop laughing, I bought the book- highly recommended.

I love using a hooked coin. It is the least expensive coin gimmick. It is one of the best ways to start and end tricks when using an expanded shell and a flipper. You produce the original hooked coin seemingly from nowhere. Switch it with the shell/flipper combo. There are lots of ways to do this, and it can be done openly since you still only have one coin at the end of the switch. Produce two, then three coins, then vanish coins till you are back to one. Switch with shell/flipper with the hooked coin and vanish the hooked coin. This is better than using a pull in impromptu situations.
Humans make life so interesting. Do you know that in a universe so full of wonders, they have managed to create boredom. Quite astonishing.

Wow, David, it's been 12 years since your post above stating that your book was coming out that year (2002) and release of the first volume of what has now become a five-volume work.

You can still get Bill Spooner's Here's "Hoo" With Coins from Bill, I just got it from him last year. I was fortunate to be introduced to him at IBM in Phoenix last year and he showed me this effect.... I told him and his friend that was with him that I felt like I had just met the devil when he showed it to me. He told me that he fooled Bobo with this one. He sells the routine booklet as well as the Hoo coin... PM me if your're interested and I'll get you his contact info.

David, I got my copy of volume 1. I haven't had the time to go through it yet, but it looks good and it is beautifully done. I've had a hook coin for a while and have been wanting to get into it, and your new book will definitely give me a nudge.
