Given the number of rope effects and the number of perormers of all abilities and standards that have rope effects in their repetoires does anyone have any idea why it should be that the section of the Café given over to it, ie here, produces one of the lowest number of posts/topics?

Hi Neal,
There are probably a few reasons, but I think one of them is that many may view rope effects as too old-fashioned to include in their shows. I also think that many do not realize how visual rope effects can be and, therefore, dismiss them. Of course, those of us who post in this section know better on both counts Regards, Steve

Good question Neal!
New rope routines don't come around as often or garner the attenton given to effects with cards, coins, etc., but those of us who love rope magic post often here. If you have a problem or a question regarding rope magic...post it and they will come. Andy

It's a strange phenomenon with rope magic. Everyone on this board probably performed C&R rope, professor's nightmare, etc. to a living room full of relatives in their youth. Yet many young hobbyist (and more) seem to ignore rope after they master a small handful of basic tricks. They would never think of limiting other classic props (coins, silks, etc) to such a small repertoire. I must admit, I did the same until I became an old magic book fetishist...scores of forgotten routines that are just as striking today. And you can't beat the reasonable equipment cost.
Now I feel like browsing over at the Learned Pig Project.

Some times people are afraid to ask because some members do not like to read the same topic and they send you to the Quicksearch section, however most of the members are very nice people so feel free to post your topics (like this one).
I do not post a lot, but I am always here.

Perhaps rope magic falls between the cracks. Too bulky to be considered by many for close up (although it's not bulky I'm sure some see it as being so)and not flash big or grand enough for stage.
There might be something to it.... I know ropes can and do work effectively in all settings but there's a part of my brain that still has rope effects pegged as being most suited, most of the time, for 'parlour style' magic and it's associated crowd size. these are probably the working environments least likely to be presented to performers of all abilities. just a thought. When Blaine does rope magic they will come. Wait...I've an idea, black rope. Get black rope and call it Ghost Rope or Phantom Xtreem Rope, the kids will be here to announce their new creations with names like "Skizo Ropes" (cut and restored), Demonic Daze (prof. nightmare) etc.

Perhaps I'm the odd ball here at the Café, because when I do walk around I usually perform two card tricks, about 6 Dusheck tricks, and 15 to 20 rope tricks depending on how well I'm doing, so to me my best stuff is rope, Steve Dusheck, and rubber band magic.

I'm so glad you said old school, because I recently purchased the George Sands DVD sold by his son Alan, and boy was I impressed. George was not the best when it came to working out an entertaining routine, because he would just fire move after move at you faster than the an audience could see them, and looking at his moves I couldn't help but notice that ALL of the moves I learned from the magicians of today came from George. I have lots of rope books, lecture notes, and DVD's in my office, but there are several moves I saw George do on that DVD that I never saw before. I need to go over that DVD several more times in order to see it all. I highly recommend the George Sands DVD for the real rope heads out there, and I'd like to thank my friend MagicSanta for telling me how cool George Sands was.

Al, I wish I had spent some time with George Sands. He lived 30 miles away in Janesville Wisconsin before he died. There is a magic shop called The Conjuror's Corner in Janesville that has a nice little theater next to the shop where a meeting of magicians is held every other month.
He attended one meeting (I wasn't present) where one of the locals performed his routine as a tribute, but George fell asleep before it was over. The poor man was not doing well for some time before he died. I bought the DVD and book from his Son about a year ago, and yes, his ideas inspired much of the rope magic that has come since his Sandsational Rope Routine was published. Andy

Maybe he just wasn't terribly impressed with the performer's homage.

I LOVE rope magic and do at least one routine in virtually every show, whether close-up, parlor/platform, or stage.
Al, I'm a also a HUGE George Sands fan. I got to see him at a convention in the 90's, and he not only had flawless technique, but I found him very funny. I'd be interested in that DVD. Where can one purchase it?

I have a large rope library, and George is in a class by himself.

I truly enjoy rope magic and could do the whole show with it if
I let me. It plays big, in your hands, in front of your face. No table needed. But that said I don't read many of the posts about it. Go figure. Bob |

I think it was that since ropes are best presented at 'parlor' level, and fewer magicians perform at that size, fewer magicians do rope magic, hence fewer habitate this section of the woods. That's what I got out of it, anyway.
