I am having problems doing a pop twist and would like some advice.

In theory I believe I should make two ear twists with a bubble inbetween and then split the ear twists and pop the central bubble.

The problems I have are;

1) Sometimes when I do my ear twists the air is squeezed out into adjacent bubbles.

2) Splitting the ear twists seems impossible without popping them.

I suspect I need to make my ear twists softer but don't seem to be able to manage this.

It will also depend on several factors, like whether you pump or mouth inflate. The TYPE/brand of balloon, how large of a bubble you leave to make the ear twist, and, believe it or not...the COLOR of balloon you're using.

You don't have to split the ear twists do a pop twist.

If the air is being squeezed out into an adjacent bubble you haven't turned the twist a sufficient number of times. Make your bubbles with 4 complete twists between bubbles in a soft balloon. Ear twist the first and last bubbles with 4 complete twists ( a twist is a full 360 degree revolution) and then pop the one in the middle.

Tis true that you don't have to but why would you not when that is such a superior method with not any more work..

Wardini,

I am not a big fan of Pop Twists, but I can make them successfully. The problem might be that the balloon is too soft. I know this is counter to what you are thinking. You need the pressure from a firm bubble to hold the broken end in place. Follow Lochlan's advice and make sure you are turning the ear twist around completely for 3-4 revolutions. The sequence should be this: ear twist, bubble to be popped, ear twist. Splitting the ear twist may provide a better grip and prevent air leakage, but it is not neccessary. If you are having trouble splitting the ear twist, you may want to try this sequence: two small ear twists, bubble to be popped, two small ear twists.

I hope this helps. Let us know how if our suggestions helped.

Thanks everyone. I've got a party on Sunday so I'll be making a load of balloons before hand. I'll let you know how it goes.

If you are going to split the ear twist, don't twist the ear twist more than once but twist the split 3 or 4 times. to many twists before the split makes the ear twist to tight.
I use pop twists a lot as I love one balloon stuff and people love to watch you pop a balloon on purpose.

Was taught a fail-safe pop twist method a few years back by Paul Bellanger at a Maryland Jam.

Usual set-up: bubble + ear twist + small bubble + ear twist + bubble.

Instead of splitting the ear twist bubble in the usual fahion, rotate the first ET so that it is below the the twisted strand on either side of it. Now pull up on the ET so that the twisted strand on either side cuts the ET into two. Twist these two bubbles two half turns. Repeat on the second ET. Pop the center bubble.

I use this in the ninja sword all the time, and the failure rate is just about nil.

Baowulf, thanks for putting it that clear, this is how I do it also and did not realize that this is different than normal. It is so hard to do this over the net.
