Well this is just about the coolest forum EVER! I decided to lurk for about 20 minutes before realizing this place is great. Big thanks to all of you for making a wonderful place
Here's my story, warts and all, and why I'm here... My magic obsession began before I can really remember. I was maybe 6 when I got my first magic set. My grandma got it in a toy store at the mall, in the 70's, and it included this really cool plastic top hat. Soon thereafter I was going to the library regularly, seeking any and all magic books. Every time we went on vacation, I'd grab the phone book and look up a local magic shop, and beg my parents to take me (which they did, bless them). At age 11 (I think) I bought a copy of SuperMagic by Paul Harris and it changed my life. This wasn't a kit-- it was "real" magic, pro stuff, and I was really hooked. Later I would perform at the summer camp I attended, and really enjoyed it. While that performance went well, I would soon realize I was realize I was terribly self-conscious about performing. So later I would perform a couple more times in my life, but nothing major. A couple of tricks for friends, but my introversion led me to dream up routines and work more on inventing and modifying existing tricks. As a creative person my real joy comes from taking an effect or an idea for an effect and developing it. However, after almost a decade of not doing anything with magic, I'm trying to get properly trained. Over the years I've lost, sold, given away or had stolen nearly my entire collection. What I have left I'm guarding, and I'm slowly building a new foundation, resting heavily on the essentials: like The Royal Road to Magic and such. So, after nearly 30 years of magic I'm starting all over again! Now with kids, a job where I work easily 50+ hours a week, plus a side gig teaching 10hrs. a week it is hard to make time, but I do try. Expect me to pop in and ask n00b questions from time to time! Thanks again for the wonderful community. I've tried other places, and I think this will be "home" for the conceivable future
