I had the best time today at lunch. I go to lunch once a month or so with a friend who loves to tease about my interest in magic, knows enough to guess wrong about methods, etc. About three months ago at lunch I put a some change on the table (quarter, dime, nickel and three pennies) picked up the quarter and nickel and began trying to balance the nickel on the quarter. No luck. Lots of teasing from my friend.
Last month, at lunch, same story. This month, same story, except, late in the lunch I switched the quarter and for a matching quarter and nickel from the balanced set. This time, lo and behold, the nickel balanced on the quarter. Amidst the resulting cries of disbelief, I lapped the balanced set and tossed the ungaffed quarter and nickel to my friend. he was late to work trying to figure it out. The first time I used the balanced set the method was guessed very quickly. Setting it up this way, great pay off. |

Nice work. The build up can make or break the illusion.

I have the balanced version from hocus pocus that was heavily discounted where you can balance 3 coins. a quarter, a nickel, and a penny. only problem is they wouldn't stand up to close inspection. anyone have recommendations for this besides switching them for ungimmicked coins?

I think balancing three coins is one too many. three gets people to thinking and the effect takes too long to play out. Two coins, and not for long, works better for me.
Today I expanded the coins at the lunch table idea to where I work. I put several quarters, nickels, dimes and pennies on the desk. On a break I made a noisy effort to balance the coins, claiming to have seen someone else do so just a few hours prior. Soon several people were stopping by to try the impossible. When mine actually balanced, they were even more determined to balance theirs, especially when mine fell after just about 8 seconds. By the time they decided to try mine, the balanced coins had, regrettably, fallen on the floor in one of my clumsy efforts and the coins I picked up from the floor never did work for the other folks. |

I have now moved from the quarer/nickel to the quarter/dime. The dime is smaller and allows the claim that the gap in size allows room to balance if one is careful.
