Have a GREAT time. And get ready for the "thunderous" applause!
Look out for all those "Beer Drinker's and He#% Raisers" who will be sliding around in the Tennessee version of "Rio Grande Mud" all while wearing their "Cheap Sunglasses" and talking about how "Jesus Just Left Chicago".... Mark. |

The rain held off, and the concert went on without a hitch. It was great! Only problem is aside from being a trifle deaf this morning, I'm not worth a darn at work today! Hopefully I won't be needed for anything, and I can sit here, look like I'm busy, nurse this headache, and leave at 5:00! Only souvenier I wanted was one of those keychains....now, I just need the roadster to go with it!

I was a production assistant on their show at the Continental Arena in NJ. I saw them a few times in the 80's but this was the first time working with them. After meeting them and spending one on one time, two things stood out. How small and frail Billy Gibbons is but yet how cool and friendly all three of them were. Very nice guys. But the most impressive thing is how just three of them can blow the roof off the place. One of the best live bands working! Almost all those sounds come out of Billy's guitar! Amazing!
I know you had a great time! The only other three piece band that was any good, Rush. |

Cream, no one will ever come close.

Cream? I saw ZZ Top 20 years ago, you had to have seen Cream 40 years ago! 40 Years ago if you were into Cream enough to see them the likelyhood of you remembering is is unlikely.

Not quite. It was 40 years ago and I well remember the concert. Chicago--last leg of the Goodbye Cream tour (mid October--I was 16 yrs old). The statement was the only other three piece band that was any good, Rush. No. Here's another--The James Gang, 1970-71. I may be old, but not that old. I remember...

Ohhh, I'm sorry. You are correct, there have been a number of three piece bands that were very good. Rush has a very full sound. There are a number of concerts I saw years ago in San Francisco that, well, I don't really remember.

Don't forget Jimi Hendrix and The Experience (1967) with Mitch Mitchell and Noel Redding or The Band of Gypsies (1969) with Buddy Miles and Billy Cox.

MagicSanta (and Justin), nothing wrong with Rush. And there are concerts I vaguely remember. One was Hendrix at the Arie Crown Ballroom in Chicago---I was in a haze.......

I saw a DVD a couple of weeks ago of a Cream reunion tour a few years ago (in the nineties, I think--I don't own the DVD). So even younger whippersnappers could have seen Cream live.
By the way, I found the DVD absolutely astonishing. I mean, it's one thing to have chops; it's another thing to be able to play 60s Eric Clapton--even if you're Eric Clapton. If you ask me to play a song I haven't played in 10 years, it will probably take me 30 minutes to remember all the chords--and you can forget about remembering the solos. Someone like him just exists on a different level than someone like little ol' me. I highly recommend giving that DVD a look see. Jeff |

Didn't they play a couple shows in the UK at the most? I don't think they played the US.

A quick Amazon search shows it wasn't a tour, but a four night series of concerts at the Royal Albert Hall in 2005. It's worth watching, as I said. The DVD is over 20 bucks, however, so unless you're a hard-core Cream fan you may not want to buy it.

Then yes, I was aware they played in London in 2005.

I saw ZZ Top many (many many) years ago when they were the warm up act at concerts... this is going to sound like a VERY strange combination, but if my memory serves me correct ZZ Top was the warm up act for Alice Cooper in the late 70s (or early 80s). I remember being very impressed by the sound these three guys put out (and it was loud). As far as concerts I will never forget... it has to be John Denver in April of 1975 (I was 18 at the time and in my first year of college... it was the Evening with JD tour) and Eric Clapton last year in Charlottesville, VA.

Yup, ZZ Top use to open for Alice Cooper. By the way, Alice Cooper has absolutely won the rock and roll wife contest. You ever seen his bride of over 30 years? She looks like she is barely 30 years old and is an absolute doll. Viva la Alice!

Heh. I missed ZZ Top in concert three times, and Alice Cooper twice. ZZ Top is coming to town next month with Quiet Riot (not much to be said about a band whose biggest hit is a cover); hopefully, I'll be able to catch them this time.

Cream played 4 shows in London and 4 shows at MSG in NYC in 2004.
I would add Allen Woody Era Gov't mule as an excellent sounding Power trio, their current line up is a four piece band. |
