I was watching tv last night and the Masked Magician was on doin one of his revealed things.

Are these starting to come back on again? The sad part is he is revealing tricks badly.

What is coming to this world.

It was a re-run.

The credits stated that it was from 1997. It is a re-run but will surely capture a new audience nonetheless.

It is really a shame, I had quite a few co-workers come up to me today to let me know that they now new had I had done the linking rings. It really takes the fun out of it for both audience and performer, I think...

Yep...you're right. They have now lost the ability to be entertained by certain effects.

But...on the other hand, I still LOVE to watch magic, even though I know how a lot of it is done.

I still am amazed! Maybe they will be too.

Story time.

A week after the first show aired I had a show at a office holiday party. Out of curiosity I asked how many had seen the Masked Magician show. Only the kids in attendance raised their hands. after chastising the parent for allowing their children to watch unsupervised television I started my program.
When I pulled out the linking rings I saw one of the kids who raised their hands earlier in the evening get visibly excited and run over to his mother and start talking to her, undoubtedly telling her he had seen how this trick worked on TV. Naturally I picked him to assist me in the trick. I handed him a ring to look at and then linked it to another and handed them to him. He fiddled with the set of two as I ran through my standard routine. The look on his face was priceless as the rings weren't doming apart like the guy on TV said they should. I was able to fool him far more that night than I would have had he not seen the show because he thought he knew how the trick was done.

Yes exposure is bad but it isn't the end of the world and can be used to our advantage. Simply whining about it isn't going to do anybody any good.

It still bugs me though.

Is there any way to vito this. Could we get a petition started to send to the station that are airing this show? Its coming on Fox for the U.S. and sky and ITV in the U.K.

Who wants to?

I'm ready. Nothing is going to happen without some initiative.

p.s.- There is a difference in whining and taking a stand for the right cause.

That comes across as if you were watching and that is exactly what the station wants... your eyes on their commercials.

I don't think I've ever come across someone (until today) who explicitly stated they had ever watched the Masked Magician; however, I have had people say they "know how it's done" on several occasions, but they never mentioned that show or that person.....so I really never gave him much consideration.

But today, my wife and I were eating lunch at the Cheescake factory, and sitting next to us were a couple of nurses on lunch break. During the course of lunch, I heard one of them start talking about the Masked Magician, and how they watched him last night. She then proceeded to explain the linking rings to her friend. I was stunned.....literally stunned. I uttered a few choice words to my wife and never said anything to the women, but it was still an interesting incident.

Incidentally, I agree with many linking ring performers that regardless of the fact the trick has been exposed numerous times, it can still fool people "in the know" if performed properly. There is a great quote in Greater Magic regarding this, but I'm too lazy to look it up at the moment. Smile

Unfortunately, this is all too true. Controversy=ratings. Ratings=good.

I saw the expossing magic special on TV again. I didn't even remember the effects from when the special first aired. No one else will either.

Christopher is right give most a day and they will forget the reaird show. Some it will take bit longer for them to forget but they will. The less adverse publicity this type of thing gets the better.

I have had non magicians ask me about the show but that is always after it's been on the tube again. Not from someone remebering it from ten years ago. Most that have asked me about it think it is something that was just shot and aired for the first time. NO one I mean no one (Accept for magicians) remmeber the shows for more then a month if they remember it for that long. The shows are stupid anyway and there not very entertaining. That is another reason no one but a magician will remember a thing about them.

Payne is right, laymen who bought the invisible deck in the gift shop at Disneyworld are always amazed at the way I do it, because I got tired of getting caught.
