Wow! FINALLY a touch screen ipod! Those of you in the USA were lucky enough to get iPhone but now everyone worldwide can enjoy the multimedia functions of the iPhone in the form of iPod Touch (I heard loads of people bashing the phone function of the iPhone). Check out apple.com. By the way, anyone willing to give their reviews on the new iPod Touch?

I bought an iPhone yesterday, and I think the touch screen is great.
Even when I misssspelll a word, it almost always corrects it properly when I hit the space bar to go on to the next word. As Kelly Duro told me about his iPhone, and I agree, "the thing is just a joy to use." (so I'm sure the touchscreen ipod will be the same way, as it is virtually the same thing, minus the phone, and add a few gig)

Wow.... like everything else apple puts out I am sure it's going to be grossly overpriced.

Be aware that the touch screens on these only last three to six months under heavy use before needing to be replaced. Reports of failures are begining to pour in all over he net. Read about it here http://tech.monstersandcritics.com/news/article_1342402.php

Touch Screen iPod with 16GB, 22 hours music, 5 hours video battery life...
Or Click Wheel iPod with 160GB, 40 hours of music battery, 7 hours of video battery... Difficult decision that one. |

That and the touch costs just about as much as a 160 GB iPod... not that I would condone buying an ipod... Creative > iPod

Do you have any facts or sources for that comment Payne? or just respitting out what some guy at "monstersandcritics" .com has to rant about.
All these will degrade over time, Harddrives, DVDs, flash memory, CRT monitors, LCD screens.... the timeframe overwhich they do is the important point. Unless you have a figure that the life on screen is actually <5 yr then please stop spreading FUD around. |

I'ma frequent visitor to all kinds of mac sites and forums, and I've not heard anyone complain yet about their iPhone screen, and there are lot s of early adopters out there.
The touch screens in the iPhone are not heat sensitive as mentioned above. They need a mild electric current, much as the old iPod clickwheels do to control the volume, etc. Go ahead and touch your iPhone screen with a hot pencil eraser and see if anything happens. Nothing? That's because it needs a mild current, not heat. I'm all for finding flaws and exposing them, but I'll take this one with a big grain of salt for the time being. Kevin

Um payne you can't quote 7 different articles when they are really all linking back to the single marketwatch source.
100 blogs linking/copying one actual story = 1 story.(not 100+ stories) Furthermore, THAT article is mostly fluff except for a single quote from a FINANCIAL ANALYST(nothing to do with technology or knowledge of any technical details) who claims not that the iPhone has this problem, but another company that was trying to make a similar device but failed had this problem. In other words, all your articles all stem from a tiny quote from a non-technical financial analyst that doesn't even know anything about the Iphone!!!! So please stop spreading FUD until you can find a single reputable source from someone that might actually know what they are talking about. -daegs ps also I will say you have ***** to show a digg story as a source when its really just a text link to the marketwatch story, not even any commentary just summary and link. Does this mean I can make some wildly outlandish claim, but as long as I get digg / slashdot and like 12 mac blogs to link to me, whatever I say will "Have well over a dozen sources confirming the claim". |

OK here's one from Apple Insider
http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/07/......ens.html And some people on MacRumors forum having the same problem http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=4004709 Another article here http://blogs.business2.com/apple/2007/08......zon.html stating that "So far the number of iPhones affected seems to be small, although it's difficult to tell because some of the Apple discussion threads where the problem first surfaced seem to have been removed. We counted 11 separate customers with dead zone iPhones on one MacRumor board (see here) and 4 more on an AppleInsider thread (see here). One of the Apple discussion threads still active includes reports of at least 7 separate incidents." another report here http://mac.commongate.com/post/iPhone_Dead_Zone_Screens that states "Apple has responded swiftly to scattered reports of "dead spots" on iPhone touchscreens -- and received high marks from users for the speed and efficiency with which defective devices were replaced. But now a London-based analyst familiar with the provenance of Apple's touch-sensitive technology suggests that the company may have a growing problem on its hands." another report here complete with comments from several users experiencing the problem http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/09/apple......issues/2 A personal testimony here http://www.patrickmaloney.net/ And another first hand report here http://popsci.typepad.com/popsci/2007/08......y-i.html

Um, "dead" touchscreens that are dead right away would be a seperate problem from the underlying technology quickly deteriorating as your first post suggested.
There will always be DOA items in mass manufacturing, dead pixels in screens or dead inputs or whatever else... what matters is how company handles them and Apple usually handles customers very well. Even your quoted articles state Quote:
"[Apple] received high marks from users for the speed and efficiency with which defective devices were replaced." another article states: Quote:
Today I am in awe of Apple Support," he wrote. "This may not be true for everyone, but [I] got an unsolicited call at my office from Apple Support on this issue and they were helpful and we put together a return on the phone. Your first claim was that there was an inherit design flaw in the touchscreens that causes them to wear out fast.... this is total FUD, now you are just quoting articles that say some iPhones are dead right away, but that apple is handling them well. So what is the news piece? High tech items will always have a small amount of manufacturing errors, they have just sold over a million Iphones so this is a small %, and apple is responding well to it, so how is this any different than Ipods or LCD screens or cellphones(my first two Cingular Razors had manufacturing problems... should I be running around yelling about that?) By your quoted articles(not minding the FUD from some financial analyst, we should all be buying Iphones from Apple because of their great product and service!!! |

I could really care less one way or the other as I don't own an IPhone or an IPod nor do I have any desire to. I was just passing information along that I heard about on the news so that future purchasers could make a more informed decision. I'd also be curious to know that if this is simply an out of the box failure why is Apple censoring its support page by removing any reference to this issue from it? If I remember right it took them a little time to fess up to their self igniting Powerbooks as well.
