Nowadays most people just don't dress up anymore when they go to a show, especially a casual magic or stage act. This can prove to be very difficult for the stage pickpocket. Without those dapper suit jackets, smooth ties, loose slacks, and those extra items that fit nicely in a 2 or 3 piece suit, a pickpockets act can suffer a bit. What if the stage pickpocket provided the suit jackets for the audience participation, for a crowd that might only be dressed in tank tops and short shorts. What if the performer provided a number of jackets in common sizes as he openly filled them with things such as empty wallets, check books, watch or jewlery box, cheap glasses, etc. and then attempt to steal them back. Because its not their items in the first place, but they are still a randomly chosen audience member, I think it also ensures that everything goes well and everyone has a good time. What do you guys think of this idea, when it comes to dressing up the crowd a bit for the sake of your performance.

Any comments would be great, negative or otherwise. I can't seem to post the right questions to get feedback of any kind, any suggestions on that too.

Mr Creaber,
I cannot answer your question as I'm a beginner in the pick-pocketing arena; however, I can help you with your problem of getting more responses to your questions... You need to write your questions like a master marketer would do; e.g. as a headline to your sales letter! "How To..." and "The Secret Of..." are two of the most RESPONSE/ORDER-PULLING marketing headlines EVER! Hope this helps! Warm regards, Martin King P.S. Be patient as well, I posted one question, and it took one week for one person to respond! |

I like the idea, Mr. Crebar. Do a show as a demonstration of how pickpockets operated "in their heyday" a few decades ago. Should take off some of the heat too.
"Ah sir, you'd make a fine victim-- I mean volunteer for this demonstration! C'mon up on stage. Great, now I see you're sporting the latest in 21st century T-shirt apparel, but back in the 40's men wore full suits when they went to a nice stage show such as this. Let's have you put on this nice suit jacket, there we go..." Have him check the pockets to make there aren't any holes or tricks (important!) and as he does you take a few items from your box (a wallet, glasses, pen, pack of cards, etc) and put them into the pockets of the jacket he's now wearing (or have him do it himself). Then go into the pickpocketing jazz. =) Hell, you could pickpocket whatever he may have on him to start WHILE you help him put on the jacket! =) --Diavo

Also, have one or two jackets (maybe a medium and a large) and pick a volunteer that would fit into it. Much easier than having 5 jackets to fit to whomever volunteers...
Unless you wanted 5 guys on stage...

Thanks diavo, great stuff. This method of performing just suits me a little betten than taking their items most of the time, and it compensates for the casual dress now a days. A little to much heat for me.

IMHO ..by dressing up the volunteer takes away the spontanety (Hope I write it right)
why don't you just Improvise....steal whatever the Spectator have in his pocket... of course this will never apply if you are hire only as a pickpocket and booked certain duration to do your skill the above will apply, IF...you do another act following your Pickpocketing demo... |

Mr.Crebar,
No prob, I love being creative. =) Mesmer, I'd envision this as one routine among 3 or so in a stage show. Not the entire show, unless it was a short set allowing only one routine. And only for certain magicians' personalities. I think stealing items OFF the spectator (his own items) while helping him into the coat would be a lot of fun. Help the guy into the jacket, stealing items off him (his own wallet, etc, etc). Then give him your props to place into the jacket for himself. Then go into your stealing routine, taking the props off him as you wish. Then at the end of this you can reveal all of the items stolen out of the jacket, hopefully to some amazement. Maybe you missed one or two items and the guy can reveal that to YOU, giving you an opportunity to make a witty comment about the item you missed: "Oh, eyeglasses. I guess I need them to steal them." (Or whatever.) As the kicker ending, you then reveal HIS OWN items you had stolen. I need to find some time to experiment with this! 8-D --Diavo P.S.> -As you explain the props to the volunteer and that he should load them, tell him you're looking just to steal back these items, not his. But by then you should already have a thing or three off of him! ;P
