Would appreciate your input on the Galli Galli cups ...
Who made the Galli Galli cups? How was it made? CNC or hand spun? How many types of Galli Galli cups were made? Aluminium? Stainless Steel? Copper? Brass? How many were made? What prompted the making of this cup and its design? What was the reason for it being made? When was it made? What is the price for it now? Are the Galli Galli cups considered a collector's item now? Or just another working cup? Thanksin advance. |

Thanks, Todd. I am also hoping Pete and Bill can provide inputs on the Galli Galli cup's historical facts.

OK... the real story.
I thought there was a shortage of "big" cups... and the Paul Fox Chick Cups in particular. I discussed this with Joe Stevens and he agreed. So I decided to find out if I could get a cup "like" the above made and I ran into a magic dealer friend and asked him if he know any good metal spinners. He turned me on to the one he used. I took my set of Paul Fox Chick Cups to them and discussed making a cup SIMILAR but not exactly the same as I didn't want to infringe on the Fox design. I changed the number of "rings" and also made the cups 1/8th inch shorter. We came up with the design and I had the sets spun in COPPER and a limited number of those I took to a plating firm and had them nickle plated. This was done over five years ago and to be honest I FORGET how many of these were made. I would guess maybe 50-75 sets. I know that Gazzo loved them and used a set for some time before making his own cups. The original retail price was: Copper $195, plated $255. An interesting aside, when I went in to the spinners, the original owner, now semi-retired, came in while I was talking over the project with his son, who now runs the business, and he said, "You ever heard of Al Wheatley?" I said, "Sure." He then added, "I spun the first chop cups for him."

The Galli Galli cups were my fourth set of jumbo cups. I got the first set right after I visited Joe Steven's shop. He had one cup sitting on a shelf. He called Pete and Pete drop shipped them to me. After that, I was definitely on the road to ruin and degradation.
Originally, I planned to collect only jumbo cups. Then I got hold of some really nice mini cups.

I don't remember, but I would guess 5-6 years ago. I have absolutely no memory for dates.

Thanks, Pete.
If I may, may I know the name of the maker that spun those Galli Galli cups? I'm trying to compile historical facts and story on this cup. |

Sorry, I keep that a secret. Sources are hard to find and often must be protected.

That was 2000 Pete ...I think they are in the Winter 2001 Steven Catalog but he had a set at the DMS before they were in the Catalog. I think you delivered a few sets at that time and he wanted them Photgraphed for the new catalog right away. I remember asking him what the price was and he said no idea yet but I am working on it.

James, if you read the post earlier it says "Spun in copper". Frankly I have yet to see a CNC cup that handles well, there is something about the balance that doesn't work. Altho the Johnson and Porper cups come close as they were able to cut the inside surface closer.

Thanks, Pete. I was reading too quickly and missed out the part that says spun in copper.

I am sure this is a dumb question, but I'll ask anyway: Where did the name "Galli Galli" come from?

Galli Galli was a tremendous magician seen often on TV with the Ed Sullivan show. He did the cups and balls with baby chicks and was dressed in his native robe. I believe he was Egyptian. So when I decided to market these cups, in a conversation with Joe Stevens we thought it would be cool to use the name Galli Galli to honor and remember him.

The name Galli Galli was originaly a frase used in Egypt and other Arabic countrys by street preformers to gather a crowd.
